What's wrong with classical music on vinyl?
Thanks so far for the responses.Rushton, to answer your question about if I have audiophile-grade new classical LP's, the answer is no. (However, there are a couple that I'm considering getting.) Maybe that would be a decent test. And yes, it's cer...
What's wrong with classical music on vinyl?
Hi Rushton, thanks for your input, and for confirming one of my suspicions about recording volumes (happens on CD's, too). As you may recall, I had similar problems a couple years ago with my Music Hall MMF-5. I now have a Project RM-6 which is a ...
Cool Amps Needed for Eggleston Savoy's
InnerSound ESL 300A very high powered amp with little heat.
Coaxial or Toslink digital output from a PC
Try the M-Audio Dio2496. It is serving me very well in this capacity. I'm currently using the Toslink out right now because of the long distance it has to travel.Michael
Will a more resolving CDP improve my system?
In my experience, the CJ PV10a is a very lush, warm preamp that sacrifices detail for warmth and richness. From a detail perspective, my sense is that it is the preamp that's the limiting factor here, and a more resolving CD player won't necessari...
tubes for CAL Alpha
I second the Sylvania 5751's. I've only put them into my DAC recently but I can clearly say right now that it's the best my Alpha has ever sounded. For a second-choice budget tube, I'd recommend either a JJ 12AX7 or Sovtek 5751. The JJ is a little ...
Recommendation for inexpensive integrated
I second the Jolida hybrid ($350 NEW). You can also find one of my favorites, the Jolida 302b, in the $600's used if you're willing to up your limit slightly.Michael
Recommendations for "pure class a" amp under 1K
Try some Monarchy SE-100 monoblocks; you should be able to find them for around $1000 for the pair. Very sweet Class A sound. They do run hot, though.Michael
What are your most favorite violin concerti?
For me, in order:1) Tchaikovsky (unassailable, in my opionion)2) Dvorak (close 2nd to Tchaikovsky, if that's possible)3) Mendelsohn4) Sibelius5) Prokofiev6) GlazunovMichael
Good looking tube amp suggestions
Try the Jolida 302b. It's $950 NEW, has the retro exposed-tubes look, and a very seductive, warm sound.Michael
Helping a friend put together a sub-$1000 system
I would go with a used Music Hall CD25, used PSB Stratus Mini, and an NAD, Rotel, or entry-level Jolida integrated (used or new). Very high bang for the buck.Good luck,Michael
To DAC or not to DAC
Perhaps I don't understand your question, but why don't you try it both ways (with the DAC hooked up to the digital out on the Theta vs using the analog out from the Theta) and see which you like better.Michael
Does anybody have Totem Arro's and CJ tubes?
My experience with the Arro's is that they tend to work best with warm-sounding tube amps. CJ would fit that bill nicely. And the best amp I've heard them with was the Jolida 302b (around 45W) tube amp.A lot of expensive solid-state amps don't sou...
$2500 amp and pre/pro
Prpixel,The Sherbourn and Outlaw are very similar, but Sherbourn makes some further modifications (I'm not sure of the specifics). In addition, it's in a much nicer chassis that goes well with their amps.I strongly disagree with your statement tha...
