Advice on a turntable for a clean midlevel system
I agree with all the VPI posts. Parts are available, support is easy, VPI will always be in business, etc., etc., and so forth. As an added bonus, they really sound great..
Dialing in my analog rig - Need help
After all adjustments are checked and double checked...and are correct, try using some damping at the arm. Adjust by dropping in the oil, one drop at a time. The sound will get better and then one too many drops, and the sound will deteriorate. Ta...
VPI Scoutmaster and Target Wall Shelf
VPI recommends a thick maple block under their tables. Bearpaws are even better. Corian is good...Ultima is even better, though very expensive.
Headphone amp and headphones... ?
Listen to the Sennheisers, Grados, AkG's. Go to Heaphone.com and get their amp. The resulting sound will be much better than your current system....actually, better than almost any speaker system.
VPI Scoutmaster and Target Wall Shelf
Take a look at Bearpaws at Vermontaudio.com... You get rid of the minifeet, and screw these things in. I have a Superscoutmaster, and the difference for the better was absolutely startling.
Do Mono Block amps provide better sound ??
I have always found that a better quality stereo amp is better than 2 average mono amps. When you have superb amp, then mono amps provide just a bit more...this should be the last thing to do...after getting a top of the line Aye, AudioResearch, etc.
a good pre amp with remote usd6000 or less used
Ayre should be on your list
Cardas Cold Forging
I used to manufacture cable ...sold it in NY, NJ, etc. I always found that soldering degrades the sound.
Best way to clean speakers
Do not torque the speaker drivers. B&W has a foam gasket that if torqued too much will negate their use...Richard Vandersteen told me that the speakers are epoxied in...the screws are there to hold the speakers in place until the epoxy sets......
VPI Classic vs. Well Tempered Amadeus
..regarding VPI tables. If you are using the minifeet, performance can be greatly enhanced if you remove them in favor of something called Bearpaws. Check out Vermontaudio.com I was amazed at how much more I get with these. More space, more and cl...
Does phono stage noise drive you crazy too?
I'm using an Ayre unit which is DEAD quiet. It sounds to me as though your pre is working too hard. Try reducing the output level and turning up the volume control on your preamp instead. The less hard phono stages work, the better they are.
Turntable rumble/Hum problem/s
When I lived in a different state, I got a very slow in and out movement of the woofer cones which was traced to the cables picking up radar from a nearby airport. When I used shielded speaker cables, the woofers stopped pumping and draining power...
Question for the Hi-Fi experts ??
In truth, you get far better fidelity through headphones than you can with speakers. Headphones work in a much smaller environment and designers can make the small excursions of the diaphragm more responsive to the given signal. I use Vandersteen ...
Any benefit from" same brand" amp/pre-amp??
I am an advocate of having the same brand of components...they were matched for each other, and there is no danger of anything untoward. I have and all Ayre system which brings out the best of each individual component.
The sound of glasswear
Solid state tends to come online more immediately than do tubes. As tubes warm, they sometimes create low sonic pulses that can damage a speaker under certain instances. When the 2 units are turned on together, the preamp opens sooner while the am...
