Best amp for Magnepan MG-12
Try an NAD C 275BEE stereo amp (or the integrated pre/amp, C 375BEE). Used C 275BEE amps can usually be had for around $700 here on Audiogon. I used this amp before I purchased my Cary 500 mono-blocks. The NAD is excellent and has ample power, cur...
Almost Time to Replace My DV-20xl
Well, that is a big part of why I went with the DV507 MKII in the first place. My first table was a Scout and it was good but I never cared for the arm that much; too jumpy and skidish...the 507 arm is a beauty, solid as a ROCK, performs fantastic...
Almost Time to Replace My DV-20xl
I use the Aries 3 and I agree it's a good table but not necessarily a great one. However it's still fairly new whereas my cartrigde is up there in hours. My next TT will be a TW-Acoustic Raven AC!!!My Dynavector 507 MKII arm is a 'keeper' and I wo...
Almost Time to Replace My DV-20xl
I'm not too concerned about the arm interface; I have a Dynavector 507 MKII and it's beefey enough to handle any cartridge, especially one like the Xv-1s that is pretty heavy. My main issue is that ever present issue of diminshing return as you mo...
What speakers have best bass for hip hop, and rock
I second the motion recommending KHorns. They are easily found in the $2k - $3k range used. They are extremely easy to drive ( use a good low to medium watt tube amp) and they will blow you over with sound! However, Khorns require a good room wher...
How do the Magnepan 3.6r compare to the new 1.7
Oh yeah; buy a good used pair of 3.6's and live in sonic happiness... Just be sure to feed them top-notch amplification with lots of watts and current!
How do the Magnepan 3.6r compare to the new 1.7
I have the 3.6's and I have heard the 1.6's in my own room and auditioned the 1.7's several times at various shows; I like the 3.6's better by far. I think that the 3.6's are a major step-up over both 1 series. I've never understood why J Valin he...
Amp more important than speakers?
Interesting comments by the 'amp' first camp, but unfortunately they are completely mistaken. As was said earlier, the speaker and the manner in which in interacts or integrates into the acoustic space is first and foremost. If that interface is f...
Amp more important than speakers?
My comments on going speakers first really have nothing to do with the relative cost of components; spend as much as you like and can afford!Find a speaker that you really like and buy it. Then if you want to spend ten times as much (or more) on t...
Starting out- a Beatles question
All the Beatles albums are execellent if you can get a copy that is in good condition. For an original look on eBay for s MFSL Original Master recording of Abbey Road. For a new release absolutey pick up a new copy of the Love album; it is excellent!
Amp more important than speakers?
I agree, in the extreme amps are impacted by the size of the room and more obviously the speaker load/characteristics. You probably wouldn't go with a flea powered SET amp if your room was 25 x 35 for example, not unless of course your were using ...
Amp more important than speakers?
Another reason you should do speakers first is the fact that every speaker you purchase will be affected by the room you place them in; that's a fact! Most amps that I know of are not really impacted by the room dimensions or even the wall surface...
Amp more important than speakers?
Speakers first; more than any other single component they set the tone and define your system. For example, horn speakers are different animals than your typical panel speaker (ie Magnepans). Stand mounted monitors are different animals than tradi...
Advice for first pair of Maggies
BTW, doesn't Magnepan sell the MMG's direct with a 30 or 60 day money-back guarantee?
Advice for first pair of Maggies
If you are listening primarily to jazz and classical I think that you would be very happy with the Maggies. Of course, if you can, as always, 'try before you buy.' Perhaps a fellow Audiogoner can let you get by for a personal audition. I'm in the ...
