Explain Amp classes & how effects sound?
The simplest way to think about it is in terms of effencey; Class A draws full power all the time, usually about 4 watts for every watt of rated output. So they will be large and run very hot. As you progress down the alphabet the amps become more...
VPI SDS help
My SDS will work with my Basis 2001 at 33 but the table will not rotate at all when I switch to 45. I get the correct speed by switching the belt. Speed is accurate at both 33 and 45.
Do you leave your components on 24/7?
I leave mine on all the time, even the amp with Nuvistors. But I wouldn't leave a Class A amp on. My line stage has a standby as it has a Class A circut. I also have protection in case of storms when I am not here.
VPI SDS help
You have to do this in order to use the Classic with the SDS, a really stunning design failure on the part of VPI in my opinion. It is not in the motor itself but wired into the AC line. The Classic is also prone to making a loud pop when turned o...
connecting CD player to preampr?
I was trying to be funny but yours is better.
Removable headshells 101
I was around in the old days and always took the washers out. There is nothing wrong with detachable arms except lack of rigidity, which is arguably less important for MMs, which are inevitably themselves less rigid due to their replaceable stylus...
connecting CD player to preampr?
Do not worry, they are just labels. All line inputs are created equal. The preamp does not know the source of the signal, the labels are there for your connivence. If you like the preamp get it, it will work fine with CD. It is quite old, that is ...
Best Audio Store Name?
I used the name "Alternative Audio" for my own business starting in the mid 70s. Quite a popular name, I once had a shipment of gear go to a California store of the same name; conversely, last year I received some parts VPI had intended for "The A...
Would adding a Dac improve the sound for my setup?
My wife liked my Ready Acoustic panels so well she made me buy some more when I moved them to another system. YMMV.
does it logical to invest on expensive transport?
Yes, a good transport will make a considerable difference. $15K!!! Where were you when I was actively selling audio and was being told that $ 2000 for an amp was way too high. Seriously, $15K is more than I would spend, I have never spent a third ...
VPI SDS help
I should have thought of that, the Classic has to have a capacitor changed to prevent a loud pop or to use the SDS. On the Classic it was very easy, I have never has a Townsend so don't know. I suspect it is not too hard. On the Classic the cap is...
VPI Aries versus VPI Classic
The Classic is a good table; I have had a lot of VPIs in my 2 tours as a dealer and I have never had or heard a properly set up one of any vintage sound bad. I am just not sure it is an advance on the previous generation Scoutmaster, let alone the...
Would adding a Dac improve the sound for my setup?
Well, my $300 DAC operates in the company of Gamut L5s [$15000 retail] CJ 350 [$10500] Audia line stage [$7000] and 2 REL subs [$6000] and holds its own quite well. Is it the best DAC available, of course not; but HIFICRITIC said that they had nev...
Would adding a Dac improve the sound for my setup?
Musical Fidelity V-DAC for $299. You can return it if you don't hear a big difference; I think you will. Use a decent digital cable.
VPI Aries versus VPI Classic
Buconero, I am a VPI dealer who advised Taters to stick with the Aries. If you want a ring get the TTWeight one. I had a Super Platter on my Aries Extended and had both a VPI ring and the lighter TTW one and ended up using the TTW one more. A lot ...
