Best Big Sub? or duals?
REL is very good. I have just what you need for HT. A pair of Nelson Reed 1204s. They were designed by a California company for the movie industry to play back soundtracks at full volume in large spaces. They will reproduce 20 Hz at 120db levels. ...
Buying a New Cartridge
The Denon 110 is both cheaper and better than the 160. I have had both and this is also the opinion of HI FI Choice in the days when they did serious testing. I currently have a 110 in use with my Scoutmaster.
Best Phono Stage within 2000 $
The Pro-Ject Tube Box 11 SE was recently reviewed in HIFICRITIC and tied for the highest rating out of 8 tested , some of which cost as much as 2500 pounds. It is $695. The PS Audio and Graham Slee were well behind it.
Need some advising
Mapleshade has rebuilt classic tube equipment. Foster Blair rebuilds them and does a great job.
Audio Research LS series......
Martin Colloms has tested most of these in various magazines and rates them as follows: LS15, 25 points, LS2, 25 points, LS22, 30 points, LS3b, 25 points LS7 28 points. For comparison he gives the SP10 11 points. See the HIFICRITIC web site for ex...
Recommended CD's for classical good recording ?
Harmonia Mundi is a good place to start as is Naxos. The 70s were a good period for recordings. Only recently has digital recording become competitive with good analogue recording. A lot of early digital was bad. Check classical reviews for sound ...
sub in small room with bookshelf advice needed
Get one of the smaller S series RELs and drive it off the amp terminals. They offer almost unlimited adjustments. They will not interfear witk the Ushers but will add weight to the bottom end.
Linn Sondek Isolation
I have a Torlite stand made expressly for the Linn by Russ Andrews in the 80s. Email me if interested.
Surge Suppressor or Not?
I use a brick wall, I took it out last night to see if I could tell the difference without it. If there was a difference it was small. I do not run my power amp through it because it draws a large amount of current, I have never heard that having ...
no Direct TV DVR without phone line?
I have the high definition DVR from Direct and have not had a phone line connected to it since I have had it, or rather the 3 I have had in the last 10 months . They were not very reliable to begin with but this one has lasted 7 months or so. Hit ...
rca plugs - comparisons?
If I was happy with what I had I wouldn't change; if I was buying new I would get the best available. Good companies don't change unless they can make something better but if you already have one of their previous products you already have most of...
Using CD player without Preamp?
There is another post on this subject from a few days ago. I agree with Polk as long as the output stage was actually designed to drive a power amp. Despite having a nominal output high enough many CD players will not be as good as a good preamp i...
CD has laid back and uninvolving sound
Some of it is inherent in the nature of the two mediums. I currently have more money in my CD player than in my LP playback but it lacks something that the LP has. Some don't notice it or attribute it to distortion or surface noise. But I think th...
advantages/disadvantages of 2 subs.....
Yes, I use 2 RELs in a room that is narrower and longer. Used one originally. Two are not necessary to produce enough bass, but , as REL puts it, two load the room better. That is, although bass is non directional, generating it from both sides or...
VPI SDS producing hum at 45rpm
Contact VPI, they are very helpful.
