Speaker Placement for small room???
You can also try angling them in so the tweeter axis cross just ahead of where you are sitting. The formulas give general info, but room and contents differ so the best thing to do is what Seditious suggests.
Not getting enough volume with my new MM cartridge
I would call the Rega importer since the cartridge and phono are both from them. They should be the most informed about their products. Not always true but good place to start.
Outdated CD player
The view has been advanced recently on the HIFICRITIC forum that , by and large, CD technology has slid back since the early 90s. The best is undoubtably better but the average player is probably worse and even very expensive current players are n...
Old Style Rega Arms
I would email Rega and ask them.
Supex SDX-1100B mc cartridge
I use to use and sell the 900 and 901 Supex, Wish I had kept some. If it is better than they were then it is very good. I also use the 304, probably the most underrated cartridge, but it doesn't work with everything.
Quad ESL owners question
Spendor SP-1s. I had my first Quads in 1964 and was a dealer for years. I got my first Spendors about 1970. They are close to being as uncolored as the Quads and have more bass and top. They were designed by an engineer who had worked at the BBC f...
Spendor S8e or Vandersteen 3A-Sig or ?
I would get used S 100s, available for under 3k. New ones, which look to use the same drivers, are approaching 10k. I use them myself.
Who sells lead shot pellets to fill an equip.stand
If you were here I would give you about 60 lb. I just took out of my stands. I have routinely added it for years; I recently heard that it degrades the sound and I did some tests, it does. Steel stands filled with lead add midrange energy that sho...
Subwoofer meshes well with 2-channel?
My advice, as always, is in direct contradiction to Bobs, which must be derived from home theater practice. I use 2 REL Stadium subs with either Spendor SP-1s or S 100s which are full range speakers. Being full range does not imply a 20 to 20k Hz ...
Worth upgrading tonearm cable?
The Rega 301 which lists for $495 is currently in Stereophile's Class A along with arms like the Linn Ekos SE which costs $4950. The next cheapest arm after the Rega is the VPI at $2400. The Linn Ittok , which I had at the same time as the Rega is...
What to fill Skylan stands with for Harbeth SHL5s
I have been using lead shot for years but only just now realized how bad it is. In steel stands [sound anchors, VPI TNT stand ] it added an enormous amount of midrange energy that did not belong there. I recently put my Spendor S 100s on the dedic...
Worth upgrading tonearm cable?
I should have specified my reasons for recommending it. The Rega is cast as one piece out of magnesium. SME also does this but no one remotely close to Rega's selling price does. This produces a much more rigid, resonance free arm. Rega can only a...
Subwoofer setting
If you adopt knownothings approach a good disk is the soundtrack from the movie SNEAKERS, in which a bass drum is struck repeatedly. Down load Sumiko's short sub set up guide from their website , I learned about this CD from it. It is available on...
Speaker cables for mid and high
I have done it, most recently using Mapleshade for top and Anti Cable for bottom. Inconclusive results. As Tpsonic says results will vary as every brand will l have its own electrical characteristics. There is a very interesting debate now going o...
Weak/tubby bass on old Philips 212 TT
An old trick was to use SMALL amounts of something like BLUTAK. Can be placed between cartridge and head shell. In my former days as a dealer I was once sent a similar substance to try by an accessory co. Or on counter weight, this is my idea and ...
