What would you chose? VPI MKIII vs. Linn LP-12
I had the VPI as a dealer , used the Ittok on it and have a Linn with Grace 707 now. I would probably go with the Linn also but think that the VPI would have the warmer sound, the Linn having more detail. We all hear differently. The VPI will be l...
Speakers that like corners
There are some which a google search should locate. There are also some good speakers designed for mounting in the wall. The classic Tannoys and several American brands of the time worker that way and there are more modern designs available. Proba...
Hum...ZYX with Tom Evans Groove Need suggestions
Have you tried using a cheater plug or grounding system to center screw on AC outlet? Grounding problems are notoriously quirky and extensive trial and error is often required.
Recommended interconnect phono to preamp
1.5M appears to be a magic number for some, it is also recommended by some of the digital cable companies. On the face of it shorter should be better but as I have not [ and will not, short of being granted immortality] taken the time to exhaustiv...
Recommended interconnect phono to preamp
I am a VPI dealer and have had good luck with the Van den Hul THE FIRST ULTIMATE in the metal screened version. Actually the unscreened works as well in most cases. I was using them myself before becoming a dealer. But there is no one cable that w...
The closest approach: what amplification?
At a live event the actual sound waves will be the same for different listeners in the same place but what they HEAR will not. So there can never be an answer that fits everyone, leaving aside the critical speaker-amp interface already pointed out.
Weak ROTEL phono section
Also it will lack the RIAA equalization curve, which will make it sound strange. If you can use a CD into it I don't see how it could possibly have a phono stage. If it did you would be grossly overloading it and it should sound very distorted.
Isolating Crossovers
Yes, it would be better to have the crossovers outside the speaker entirely. My Spendor S 100s have a modular crossover bolted to the back of the speaker by the binding posts and if I do not go to an electronic crossover I am going to remove it fr...
Upgrade from DACMagic? B&W 805S rig
Actually the DACmagic scored higher than the Benchmark in HIFICRITICs test with CD transport, 32 to 22. The V-DAC did even better, 42. I have one and it is very good.
tuner better than turntable ? thread.
There are rare cases where I would agree with you but they are in the distant past for the most part. WFMT in Chicago use to get master tapes from RAI , Radio Niederland, BBC and others. They also had live broadcasts. I can still remember hearing ...
Maple Shade Recordings?
They are really exceptional. Pierre uses a very purist approach to recording and tries to get as natural a sound as possible. The Clifford Jordan jazz recording "Live at Ethyls" (sp.?) is great. The Blues recording "Preaching the Blues" which I th...
Will Old MAC outperform Cambridge 640 Azur V2?
Buy used, good products a generation or two old fall drastically in price and are unlikely to need service.
Rega Planar 3 Tonearm Question
What about the RB 250?
Rising distortion curve
Distortion measurements are almost if not totally USELESS in judging how an amp will sound. The great distortion race among Japanese amps in the 70s produces some truly awful sounding distortionless amps. There are some tube amps with even order h...
The Hub: Is a Vinyl Revival in progress?
I wish it was a trend but I fear that it is like the little mouse that I recently started to remove from a trap, it gave a few jerks so it wasn't quite dead but it certainly wasn't coming back to life. It is amazing how the industry destroyed a me...
