Love my ipod, Hate my ear buds....
I was in your exact situation about 6 months ago. Couldn't keep those damn stock Apple 'phones in my ears more than 5 minutes before the pain outweighed the music, which itself added to the pain as the sound quality was awful (goes without saying)...
McCormack DNA .5 and 1- big difference?
I would guess you could get a stock DNA-1 or a DNA-0.5 Rev. A for about the same price, so unless you really need that extra power I would think the considerable sonic improvements of the Rev. A mods would far outweigh the DNA-1 power advantage. B...
High-Def TVs?
Some HDTVs do a much better job upscaling standard def pictures than others. Don't know which model(s) you were looking at, but my Panasonic 50" plasma does a pretty darn good job with a good standard def signal to the point that I don't mind watc...
Good speakers for a low budget
Cleaneduphippy makes some very good points, and it's frustrating how many people look for advice here without giving a clue as to what they're looking for or what they already have. As a general rule I don't respond to posts that aren't more speci...
Good speakers for a low budget
If you can find them used the Ascend Acoustics Sierra 1 would be a great choice -- great looks and superior sonics. Ditto the Epos M5, or you could get the ELS-3 new for about 400 bucks and obviously even less used.Noticed there's a new pair of Si...
2 Acoustic Zen Silver Reference II IC's too much?
I'd try the AZ SRII first to see if it's too bright. One downside of the Matrix Ref. IIs is they can slow things down a bit relatively speaking, which may or may not bother you but something to take into account besides tonal differences.
Which would you pick between these 2 and why?
There's a review of the Bryston BP-6 preamp in Soundstage this month that contains a sidebar review of the Bryston 2B-SST compared to a McCormack DNA-0.5 Rev. A. Not apples to apples exactly with the two you're looking at, but might give you an id...
VMPS 626 JR
Your comments on a smaller full-range speaker made me think of this review of the Mark & Daniel Sapphire, which also has some interesting and different driver types (and I think they may have a try before you buy policy, but not sure):http://w...
Preamp recommendations up to $2000
I just auditioned a Bryston BP-6 that's in your price range, and if "open" is what you're after I can't imagine it getting much better than this. Ultra clean and undistorted sound with holographic imaging in spades that emerges from a crystal clea...
SS Preamp suggestion please
There are a couple Bryston BP-25s for sale in your price range. I just auditioned the BP-6 and found it to be outstanding, and I don't think the Bryston preamps have changed as much as the amps so if the BP-25 sounds similar to the BP-6 it might b...
Usher Be - 718's for Home Theater and 2 Channel
Have you tried pulling the Studio 100s out from the wall more? You're already sitting pretty close to them, but if you haven't experimented with it yet it would be worthwhile seeing what happens when you pull the speakers further into the room. Al...
Totem The One vs. Usher "Tiny Dancer" Be 718
"My contention is that if more audio companies concentrated less on being audiophiles and more on running their businesses there would be more successful companies. It goes without saying that you need a great product to build a successful company...
New Plasma: 1080p or 750?
At 42" 720p is all you need. I think the bigger question is if you can stretch to a 50" screen. I'm not that much into TV either, but the difference in my level of involvement and enjoyment watching my 50" vs. my neighbor's 42" is huge -- night an...
Preamps with HT pass through?
You probably know this, but unless there's a practical or convenience reason you don't necessarily need an HT passthrough. You can use any line level input on any preamp and just establish a "reference" volume level on the preamp when you set your...
good speaker with Sound stage behind????
What are you driving them with? I agree the speakers are probably not broken in yet and you should absolutely experiment with placement as well, but bright or forward sounding electronics and/or cables could also be playing a big role here.
