Metrum Onyx versus Metrum Pavane I think they use tubes, which I think helps with the sense of utter dimensionality that owners seem to rave about. No idea if better or worse than Metrum (that's always a personal decision anyway), but I think the use of tubes will make them soun...
Metrum Onyx versus Metrum Pavane Interesting thread as I also was wondering about this given the large price difference between the two. I guess the implementation of the output stage, etc. is good or similar enough in the Onyx that the extra expensive DAC chips don't make all t...
When/why to upgrade? What cables, interconnects, power cords, and power conditioning are you using?
Do preamps have a material affect on high level sources? Thing is, modern preamps are so clear that even several of them in series hardly is even noticeable. I generally agree with Lizzy, but in this case I must disagree. IME, the preamp has a HUGE effect on the sound you ultimately hear from your syst...
3 things I learned from using MANY interconnect cables Very interesting and refreshingly objective. Chord is now on my radar although relatively rare here in the US. Very nice post!
My personal review and experience with Arcam AVR 550 with Dirac Live Funny, I was just gonna post about Arcam having tons of problems in the past but not sure if it’s gotten any better in recent years. The OP’s recent experience is not a very good sign. Too bad because they do seem to be a step above in sound versu...
Question About DACs I think there have been big improvements in DACs over just the past few years such that it's possible to get sound quality from inexpensive DACs today that would've cost $5000+ not that long ago. I'd have to think there could be significant quali...
Bryston 4B3 vs Mac MC462 vs Pass Labs X250.8, OR... GRYPHON Diablo 300? To be honest I’m not sure where I fit on the spectrum of engaging/detailed vs warm and non-fatiguing. Although to me being able to listen to music hours on end might mean that the music isn’t quite as engaging. If it’s a little more fatiguing I ...
Before I purchase First, there are a ton of great options in this area, so why just these two? Second, before anyone here could give you even any semi-useful advice you need to share what's important to you from a sound reproduction standpoint and/or what you're l...
Finding the right tube preamp (input values) for Mccormack DNA @photodusty -- I think the problem with tube preamps is more with Steve's amps with his higher-level revisions (A, Gold, Platinum, etc.) rather than the stock or Deluxe models. If memory serves, input impedance on models with certain revisions wa...
Looking for more transparency. +1 @jond -- maybe you can demo something like an ARC preamp. Lots of other good tubed preamps out there that will give you more detail and transparency albeit with possibly a tad less warmth and fullness. Always trade offs.
A DAC that can make digital sound analog? With Oppo effectively out of business, will ModWright fix your $4000+ modded Oppo if you have a problem in the future? Not the way I'd go for that amount of money with so many other excellent DACs out there these days.
A DAC that can make digital sound analog? I'd do a two-week trial of an SW1X DAC. Everything I've heard from owners of these DACs implies a very organic and 3D sound I associate with vinyl. Hey, they offer an in-home trial with very little financial risk (just shipping). AND, it sounds...
Dac selections Flyby? Where r u OP?
A comparison between two DACs, one R-2R, the other ES 9038-based. Huge +1 to @celander -- especially if both DACs don't have very good reclocking built in. It's pretty doubtful there is NO difference in sonic reproduction between these two DACs, so the question is why? I agree with @celander that if you feed t... |
