Magico S5 or Rockport Atria
I’ve heard both the Q7 and Aviors and both were excellent.  If I were to sum them up I’d say the Magico sound skews more neutral thought not cold sounding at all while Rockport skews more musical though still with great detail.  Given your prefere...
Need ideas to match a pair of monitor with 40WPC tube amp
Silverline Minuet Supreme Plus would be great for bedroom and tube friendly, but they do have a small rear port if that’s a dealbreaker.  Where are you placing the speakers?
Bel Canto PrePro for music?
Using a prepro for dedicated 2-channel listening instead of a stereo pre is like using a minivan on a racetrack instead of a sports car — sure you can do it, but why?
Pass XA 25 or Bryston 3B3?
I am a big fan of Nelson Pass, but his Class A amps put out LESS as the speaker impedance drops. That’s silly, and it’s the antithesis of a Class A amplifier design.  Anyway, although the Pass may not be the space heater the Krell is it’s still go...
Looking for a vinylesk sounding DAC
Can someone comment on orchid VS pagoda?Member @teajay has written nice reviews of both, and if I recall he said if you run balanced the Pagoda offers substantial improvements. I don’t remember if he compared the Pagoda to the Audio Mirror Tubadou...
Pass XA 25 or Bryston 3B3?
What amp are you using now, and what are you looking to improve.  What aspects of sound and system performance are most important to you?
My Oppo is a bit too bright
Thank you all for your comments. To recap:1. The Oppo’s DAC is its weakness and I should look for an external DAC2. The Oppo’s DAC is quite good and can’t be bested unless I want to spend more money then it’s worth.Fortunately this can be tested. ...
Looking for a vinylesk sounding DAC
Just going on the many reviews other impressions I’ve read, if I were you I’d gravitate toward a tubed R2R NOS DAC such as the Audio Mirror Tubadour Mklll SE, etc. I believe several companies (AM, MHDT, Denafrips?) offer trial periods, and I think...
Looking for a new integrated amp
Not sure I’d rule the Sphinx V3 out too quickly. I read a very positive review of it not too long ago and don’t remember noise being an issue.  Rogue may well have sorted out any past issues by now, and its sonic properties are very much inline wi...
Looking for more detail in a speaker
Yeah speaker tuning is likely a major difference maker, and my experience with McIntosh gear is that it’s not very aggressive in the upper presence region either so the combo of the two makes your impressions very understandable.  Given your budge...
Looking for more detail in a speaker
Too many variables here to even begin to assess what’s causing the differences you heard.  How big was the demo room you listened in and how close were you to the speakers?  What electronics were the 805s being driven by, and what other equipment ...
How to judge a preamp's sound
If you’re trying to decide on a sports car, do you drive one car on a bunch of different roads to decide which one you like or would you compare several cars on the same roads? Sure, in the first case you’ll get a good idea of what that one car ca...
A move from Harbeth to... Wilson?
Sorry, but I think that the Sonus Faber are very bright.@decathlon1991 — which SF speakers have you heard? At this level I was implying the Olympica line with my recommendation and not the lower-level Venere or Sonetto lines if that’s what you’re ...
My Oppo is a bit too bright
I am just at opposite ends from @tweak1 — while beating the DAC in the Oppo may have been more challenging a few years back, with the explosion of excellent DACs in the $700 - $1500 range I think you could now find a relatively inexpensive DAC tha...
How to judge a preamp's sound
My question is, Can someone accurately generalize about "the" sound of preamp across a variety of different amps? Wouldn’t the amps be enough of a variable to at least complicate the "character" of a preamp?Yeah, I’d agree with that. While it’s ce...
