Mid life audio crisis
I have Merlin VSM speakers as well. It looks like you have one of the prescribed/standardized Merlin setups. I can see how you wouldn't have the bass slam you desire. First of all, the kind of bass you seem to want will never come from the Merlins...
Diffusion or Absorption behind the speakers?
I've experimented with both diffusion and absorption to no end. Absorption for bass, tube traps in corners an absolute necessity. As far as the mids and highs, I've been all over the place, absorption alone, diffusion alone, and a combination of b...
CARDAS Fans: Golden vs. Neutral vs. Presence?
Yes, surprisingly, the Speltz cable is at least in the same league. Thus far I've only used it from my DAC to preamp (replacing Cardas Golden Ref), and it only has about 125 hours of burn in. I've tried many of the relatively inexpensive cables in...
CARDAS Fans: Golden vs. Neutral vs. Presence?
Zear, I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think it is the shielding on the Presence that is different than GR, rather it is less conductors.I've also owned and demoed Synergistic Resolution Ref. and Absolute Refs. the active shielding does make for a q...
CARDAS Fans: Golden vs. Neutral vs. Presence?
Muralman, I also use the Speltz anti-ic's in my system, very nice cable. Still, the fact it doesn't use a dialectic doesn't make it inherently better. The Speltz cable has it's own noise to add to my system, in the form of increased rfi and emi.I ...
CARDAS Fans: Golden vs. Neutral vs. Presence?
As I said before any review has to be taken in context of the system its in, also, as MrTennis mentioned, the perception of the listener. You cannot make judgments about how a cable will work for you until you experience it within your system. I r...
CARDAS Fans: Golden vs. Neutral vs. Presence?
I think Jeff has it right with the Golden Refs vs. the Neutral Ref., the Golden Refs are definitely the most accurate of the Cardas cables. I would suspect the Golden Presence would be closest to Golden Ref, seeing as it is a decontented Golden Re...
CARDAS Fans: Golden vs. Neutral vs. Presence?
I've used and auditioned a lot of cables from a lot of companies over the years (top of line to midgrade) and I continue to come back to the Golden Refs. I find the Golden Refs are pretty much neutral sounding cables, perhaps just a touch warm. Th...
Fire place vs. audiophile....
I tore my fireplace out, my, my, my, the things some of us do for sonic bliss!
How many People own Working Reel to Reel Decks?
I received the A77 the other day, at first glance the front panel was essentially brand new, the wood cabinet had a few small spots where the veneer had lifted. I took the cabinet off for repairing and couldn't believe my eyes, this thing was esse...
How many People own Working Reel to Reel Decks?
Quite a coincidence this thread comes up now. For some odd reason I recently got the bug to try r2r, in doing some research I found The Tape Project site which really got me interested. From my research I decided that either a Revox A77 or Technic...
Phono stage revealing limitations of cartridge?
Its hard to believe there is a gain issue, I ran my Blue Point Special with 50db of gain with no problem. On the other hand perhaps there is an issue with this amount of gain into that Rotel pre stage.Sbank, the Dyna 20x comes in a high and low ou...
Phono stage revealing limitations of cartridge?
Did you try some of the other inputs on Rotel, some may have more gain/different impedences than others. After much research, I decided to go with the Dynavector 20XL, installing today. You should take advantage of the MC input on the EAR, get a lo...
Cartridge Setup?
Ekobesky is correct, although I would call that Blue Point a backwards move. The Blue Points pick up way too much surface noise, move to something like a Dynavector 10x5, there are many choices that are better than the Blue Point.
Phono stage revealing limitations of cartridge?
Yes, your cartridge is likely the major culprit at this point. The Blue Point is notorious for lightweight bass, thin and analytical elsewhere.I own a Blue Point Special, it too has lightweight bass and is somewhat thin elsewhere, and this should ...
