New vs. old DACs - opinions?
I agree with Bob, in general, newer DACs more resolving and exposing of warts, older less resolving and more forgiving nature.I just recently revisited a review from Feb. 1992 Stereophile of the ML No.30 DAC by Robert Harley. This was a state of t...
Opinions on vintage cj amps and Teflon cap mods
Casouza, I hear you on the V-Caps, can be too much of a good thing, the reason I would hesitate to recommend them in this case. I wonder who manufacturers CJ's film caps?Granting that what you say about transformers being band limited is true (I h...

The electrical work shouldn't cost that much money, trading down will defeat your whole purpose. My first inclination remains over- voltage on your AC is causing at least some of your problems. You are part of the way there already with the one ded...
VPI SSM lacking bite
Dave, is LF mechanical energy truly benign, slower oscillations should impact sonics as well, I prefer to drain off all energy maximally. The fluctuations between motor and tt are just another complication. I suspect it might be best to spike moto...
capacitor upgrade
Mundorfs are non-polarized, forget the whole polarized thing.Other film caps to consider:Mundorfs-all models, great extension on top, very high resolutionVH Audio V-Caps, even higher resolution, very even-handed tonality, priceyJantzen Z-Superior ...
VPI SSM lacking bite
I agree they tighten thing up vs. other more compliant isolation schemes, I'm just saying relative to metal spikes and other ball bearing supports I've tried.I also have trouble comprehending any sort of suspension/compliant device under mass load...
VPI SSM lacking bite
I forgot to mention, I do have Cerabases I use elsewhere in system. IME, this is not the best way to go in aleviating the problems you have. Cerrabases tend to soften the sound just a bit compared to spikes and/or Aurios. I would go back to trying...

All the power related stuff sounds reasonable. I don't get the breaking and re-establishing IC thing, this has nothing to do with power issues.I don't recall if this has already been mentioned, but it sounds like you may have an over-voltage situa...
VPI SSM lacking bite
Lack of bite and softened transients are part of the problem with my SSM setup, I'm still in the process of figuring out the problem. I've worked on isolation and modding phono pre to this point, still not where I want it.Others claim these proble...
New fantastic room but system pissing off neighbor
I've been on both sides of this one. It is absolutely not your right to listen to music as loud as you like. Check the laws, there are loudness ordinances where I live. I called the police regularly on one particular neighbor who used to crank his...
capacitor upgrade
I don't understand why you want to change from non-polarized to polarized, don't need to. Also, film caps, which are a worthwhile upgrade, are all non-polarized.

One guess. You say sound is perfect for first twenty minutes or thirty minutes. Hard to maintain perfection, only downhill from there. Have you thought you may be setting yourself up for disappointment, any little anomolie is eventually exposed.If...
Jolida JD9A or Dynavector P75 phono stage?
I'll take the Dynavector any day, richer, more pleasing presentation. The Jolida sounded rather dry and analytical in comparison. A modded Jolida could be another story.
VPI JMW 10.5i and Dynavector XX2 MK II
This should be a good match, compliance fits tonearm mass. 100ohm loading seems to be a good match for Dynavectors. I use just a touch of damping fluid, start with just a touch, add more until you start hearing the slightest loss of life, dampenin...
Trade offs?
It seems musicality is only your perogitive to define for yourself. In looking up the definition of musicality I find there are so many meanings that it is mostly undefinable. Rather it is a feeling, thus, a semantic and/or subjective term.It is p...
