"The B&W Sound" I never really had the brightness problem with my B&W CDM1 NTs, but then I was running a tube pre, which may have helped some. Your equipment may have something to do with this brightness - have you tried other speakers in your set up?Anyway, ...
THE Most MUSICAL Preamp? The Hovland 100, spectacularly musical!Audible Illusions 3A ditto!
Speaker Selection: B&W 805S or Revel M22 w/Sli-80 Have owned both brands, like the guy above have not heard the new 22's, but after long term listening, the B&W was my choice, no question. Easy to drive, refined, detailed, neutral, and non-fatiguing. Initially liked the Revels a lot, but over...
optical or coaxial ? your thoughts on Monster Monster cables are excellent cables, not a lot of hype, and a good solid value for your $$. I've owned many and compared some others, and you cannot beat them for the price. Their speaker cables in particular are excellent, as are their digital ca...
Biwire speakers. Better or not? With both my Energy and B&W speakers, bi-wiring sounded noticably better than jumpers. But the previous poster is correct - some sound better than others. If you can, borrow some cables from a local dealer and try it with your own speaks.
Eastern Electric Minimax preamp After a year of pursuing preamps to replace my aging conrad-johnson, I chose the Minimax. In a head to head comparison with the Hovland 100 (new) and a used Audible Illusions 3A, the Minimax won handily. I've done some tube rolling, replaced the s...
Audio from a DVD player-that far behind sonically? My understanding is that many times if you are not running full surround, the DVD player will revert the mix to a lower rez output or downmix. Some players do not do this - you'll have to find one that doesn't if you want full rez out of DVDs.
Speaker Daze Budget of 1500-2000 I picked up a pair of Gallo Refernce 3's about 6 months ago and have been blown away by just how good this speaker is! Works well with SS amps like your Rotel, I'm using with McCormack DNA-1 and it's a wonderful match. It's on the high end of your...
DAC for my HHB Burnit For your needs, I highly recommend the Benchmark DAC-1. Great DAC, gobs of detail w/o fatigue and an incredible soundstage. Bonus - it's got a headphone amp that is really spectacular. Leave it on all teh time, it sounds better that way anyway, al...
From biwire to single run: Now I hear a loud hiss. Here's a good test - get some cheap radio shack speaker wire, and connect two runs from your amp to your speakers (sort of a fake bi-wire). Still have the hiss? There's a problem elsewhere, probably tube related. Hiss goes away? Problem with your ...
Passive Bi-Amping-Amps With Level control Hi!Not many hi end amps out there with volumes....One suggestion would be to find a remote add-on, then you can use any amp you want. There are two that I know of - Creek makes a good one for a couple hundred clams, and if you can find one, Chase ...
Warm Detailed Bi-Wire for Magnepan 3.6R I'm using Cardas Cross bi-wire on mine and the result is warm and glorious!
DAC Help just finished auditioning both of these, and the punchline is, the Benchmark went back for a refund and the ACK! is staying! The Benchmark is a great DAC, no doubt - I can see where it garners rave reviews. It is highly detailed, very transparent, ...

Benchmark Dac1 vs Ack dAck I'm using with an old JVC XLZ 1050TN, a cheap Sony DVP655 SACD/DVD player, and an Adcom 750. With the Sony, there is some slight popping sound out of the speakers when you load a disc, otherwise the three sound virtually the same to me - I can't t... |
