Magico S5 vs KEF Blade 2 vs TAD Evo One vs YG Kipod II Sig w/pwr bass
@fsmithjack FWIW I would not buy a speaker that required 600-700 hours to break in. This is terrible engineering and horrible build quality. I don't believe Magico is that bad - I think the dealer just wants you to acclimatize your ears to the new...
Has anyone made the jump to $uper High end and were disappointed?
No regrets. 90% of my expense is the speakers. I agree that even entry level electronics is quite good. My setup sounds great with a mere iPhone plugged in.As far as speakers, mine are most alike to Quad but with rock and roll dynamics. Designed w...
Magico S5 vs KEF Blade 2 vs TAD Evo One vs YG Kipod II Sig w/pwr bass
@fsmithjack 600-700 break in is ridiculously long. A few hours perhaps at a stretch. I think after 700 hours you would become totally acclimatized to their sound - if you call that break in!
Reference disc player...UDP 205 or Marantz?
Frankly I wouldn't buy a disc player these days. I'd go PC to a Class A or A+ DAC. Burn your collection to a hardrive and get a Tidal subscription. For movies, I have an ultra UHD 4K bluray player but the number of available movies to buy are just...
Reference disc player...UDP 205 or Marantz?
@jonasandezekiel I repeat - it doesn’t even have balanced output. Not being arrogant but just trying to warn you away from something that is absolutely NOT reference grade. If you are open to other suggestions then check the Stereophile Class A and...
New Yggdrasil - First (and second) Impressions
@georgehifi My point was that the newer ESS style converters use massively parallel one bit sigma deltas and is similar to a ladder DAC only with hundreds of smaller 1 bit ladder steps. So the latest ESS chip technology has converged away from hig...
New Yggdrasil - First (and second) Impressions
@georgehifi Mojo is right in one sense but they neglect to mention that ladder DACs do a poor job of maintaining linearity.Basically a ladder R2R DAC has poor linearity but low noise and converts PCM natively.A single delta sigma DAC has perfect l...
Reference disc player...UDP 205 or Marantz?
You got to be kidding Marantz SA-14S1 a reference player ????It doesn't even have balanced outputs!!!!!Could this be part of the new cheaper line of recent Marantz products that just carry the logo badge but don't have the high quality parts insid...
Wondrous DAC
Great! My impression is that the latest DACs are both very affordable and very much vinyl like sounding but with even more detail and resolution. "And the definition is incredibly revealing without being clinical." <-- this is to me the big ben...
Psychological effects of volume control
@gdhal It is always best to have your line level equipment run close to maximum when the sound is as loud as you can stand. Just like analog tape should always be recording close to the red on peaks. The idea is you want to use the full dynamic ra...
New Yggdrasil - First (and second) Impressions
I recall when the Benchmark DAC1 came out. I could hear a significant difference between the DAC and other gear but a friend of mine could not. It was on my system so I think I had an advantage being familiar with the sound. Subsequently he got a ...
Benefits of an external DAC
@mahler123 I suspect the Mytek and Bryston DACs you tried are both Stereophile Class A or A+ ? My suggestion to the OP is to try a Class A+ DAC. IMHO that will yield a subtle improvement over the Oppo. The Oppo is obviously very good value so a lo...
Looking for Better Jitter Reduction in a DAC
On off cycling causes wear and tear too. Caps left unused for too long will fail too. So there is no single solution that is best.I suggest you let your equipment warm up for an hour before a serious listening session and for casual sessions don’t...
Benefits of an external DAC
They should sound extremely close if everything is working properly. Especially if the electronics is all built and tested to a high standard. You might need to invest more to get a subtle difference.Try a Benchmark DAC3 straight into the balanced...
Looking for Better Jitter Reduction in a DAC
@gdhal Yes - rule of thumb is every 10 degrees Celsius higher in operating temperature will half the life of many capacitors. Most caps are rated 105 degrees for 2000 hours. At 95 they will last 4000. At 85 they should last approx 8000 and so on an...
