Audiophiles vs DIY-o-philes
The problem has been aggrevated by the trend toward industrial design in fit & finish of audio components, which adds materially to cost without improving performance. No Kidding! $50 drivers in a $10000 speaker cabinet...at least the piano bl...
Sealed Subwoofer Recommendation
deep tight bass with weight that you hear in Disney Concert hall.I know exactly what you mean. I spent a few minutes with Ben Lilly last year and he gave me a few tips on my modest setup - no design just some back of the envelope advice. Excelle...
Rear Ported versus Non Rear Ported floor standing
Of the three you listened to - what did you like best? What other speakers have you owned that you like? How important are aesthetics? Do you have an amp already or what will you use to drive them? There are a great many good speakers out there - ...
Audiophile Results
Depends....a good expensive processor should give you great flexiblility on sources and tailoring teh sound (may even adjust for room modes (notch filtering))A great amplifier will get you better sound - generally more headroom and better transien...
Rear Ported versus Non Rear Ported floor standing
You should stay away from ported speakers. Unless you like an overly heavy bass. A speaker with a leaner precise bass response ( non-ported ) will give you far better transient response and the roll-off of 6 db per octave (versus 12) makes this id...
Why are LCDs more popular than plasma?
I have both and plasma is better. While it is true that LCD can give out more light (convincing in direct sunlight).....they fail in low light situations and start to look like a projected screen - they just can't cut it in low light conditions - ...
whoom instead of BOOM
I reckon Dbphd has the solution...get a big Velodyne HGS-15 (or two). Small subs just can't handle the transient energy above a certain point (around 100 db which is not loud for frequencies from 20 to 40 Hz) and run out of gas at too low an SPL t...
a Power vs Volume Question
AOLmrd1241,Yes of course - a tweeter never needs more than 50 watts....if you remove the ultra LF load from the amp then it will play cleaner louder...
Smallest room dimensions for good bass to 20hz
Arthur is right - big rooms need lots of powerful bass reproduction - very expensive as loud accurate bass is exponentially expensive. So the sound is indeed far better in a large room provided you have the resources to fill it with sound at neces...
whoom instead of BOOM
Don't know what you mean by whoom....but if you want to rattle the windows and couch and feel the sound pressure on your pants then you need one if not two big subwoofers with 15 inch woofers and 500 watt amplifiers and huge drive motors. I assume...
Cost no Object but Small Room
In my opinion a small room calls for speakers with a well-controlled radiation pattern and/or smooth power response, as inevitably the bulk of the reverberant energy will arrive earlier than in a larger room. ATC SCM 20's are quite nice in that s...
James Randi vs. Anjou Pear - once and for all
I'm with Muralman1. I agree that these blindfolded reviewers should be able to distinguish uninhibited signals through naked cables compared to rubber or plastic or leather. I just have a hard time visualizing it.
most accurate loudspeakers....
I agree with Rcprince-Dunlavy's are ONE of the most accurate speakers make around. Of course in used market since the Co went out of business Agreed. Duntech Sovereigns are tremendously well respected, as are the V's.
Does absolute polarity matter?
You should keep your sub and speakers in phase...place them all close together and then play with polarity - the strongest signal is usually in phase. Absolute phase has proven to be audible with certain very specific test signals. Some claim to h...
most accurate loudspeakers....
The dealer had a cone on hand to demonstrate how he can stand on an 8 grams 6” cone and not break or bent it. Very impressive. That is amazing!Light weight rigid cones are very attractive for rigid "piston' behaviour. The ability to control them w...
