PRE_AMP for ATC- actives??
Assuming you have an excellent two channel source already then EMMLabs gear seems popular with ATC's - any chance you could audition a Switchman? This would allow you to select any combinations of analog signals. Only issue is that it is not 7.2......
Room Treatments and WAF? Long
Steve,I don't get it - why would you treat first reflection points on a long wall that is 23 feet?I agree that the rear wall is a problem. However - it depedns onyour listening position....where is this?Suggestions1) adjustable wooden slatted blin...
Best new loudspeaker
the only true full range electrostat loudspeaker is the Big Soundlabs which are excellent . Indeed Big Soundlabs is what Gordon Holt used for many years until he got his current ATC SCM 50 ASL....I guess he has enjoyed many speakers over the year...
Best new loudspeaker
there is no mystery. no component is perfect. Indeed....but the Quad 57 is as close to perfect as any speaker in the past or the future will ever get...right?
when is a speaker considered full range?
Full range means down to about 30 Hz. There is nothing really from a musical instrument below that - even if we can hear to 20 Hz.Like others have pointed out - full range is WAY over-rated! Give me quality low distortion correct timbre sound flat...
Damping factor or watts?
Damping factor needs to be at least above 10 and above 50 it will make very little incremental difference.Watts are essential in any amp but around 200 Watts into 8 Ohms is all you need...after that it is diminishing returns.
Best new loudspeaker
the quads unlimited quad 57 are closer to real than anything out there, period. Time for all those speaker manufacturers to close shop and admit defeat....they will never better this 50+ year old product! Why everyone does not own one remains one ...
Speaker cabinet materials.
Cabinets are rarely made of wood....MDF is a good damped cheap material.Contrary to popular belief - good heavy and heavily damped cabinets with bracing add almost no audible effect on the sound - apart from the acoustic suspension from the enclos...
What is a live speaker?
Live sound = ATC. Try Sheffield Labs Drum tracks to test for a speaker that can sound like live music - percussion is the hardest to achieve because of the transients. Vocals is all too easy for most speakers - not a lot of huge dynamic transients...
Best recording labels for orchestral music
He belongs to the very small group of composers, who devoted his music to the tragedies of his own time. I agree - but he often couched his tragic themes in military music that was acceptable. If you listen to the Lorn Maazel version if his Fifth...
Best recording labels for orchestral music
You have chosen some good "pop" sounding composers. You may also like Shostakovich - try getting Lorn Maazel and the Cleveland Orchestra doing Shostakovich Fifth - they seem to be having a load of fun! Prokoviev is fun too. A lot of the Russian st...
crackling noise at high volume
For those worried about distortion this is quite normal...the tweeters used in most two ways will compress at high levels. 95 db SPL at the listening position is a bit much for most consumer designs. Piano is a good way to hear it becuase the pian...
Why are hi-end active monitors not more popular?
Tuffgong,Nice description. I agree with you that this kind of sound is not for everyone. I only recommend these kind of studio active designs for those who profess to want accuracy and faithful reproduction of the source. Of course, most people be...
The Most Realistic Speaker Technology?
my listening levels vary from 72 to 82 db. ...then forget about trying to get something to sound realistic...this is only a little above conversation levels. Most instruments are designed to be heard by audiences and have dynamics (peaks) that ea...
Classical speakers that do violins well??
...and all I did was ask for a few speaker recommendations!-Bob (OP) Faithful reproduction => go active speakers like Ajahu suggests - preferably a pro studio model.
