turning my system on during lightning storms
Reubent is right. Turning your system off doesn't provide much protection. A lightning bolt that can jump several thousand feet of atmosphere is not going to be impressed by a gap of, at most, a few millimeters in your on-off switch. Unplugging yo...
Single-wire spades from amp to biwire spkr posts?
It's also possible to have externally bi-wired cables, two lengths of cable going to each speaker, with the two cables joined at one end so that you have only one set of spade terminals at the amp. I've owned Dh Labs and Silverline cables configur...
Good budget sub for music?
I'll second Johnnyb53's recommendation of the Mirage as a very good, inexpensive sub. I have the S-8 and it does a better job in a relatively small living room than the HSU VTF-2 it replaced. Very impressive performance for the money.
CD/SACD/DVDa player for new system
Congratulations, Julie, those are all great choices and if (when) you get the urge to upgrade, the Denon and Onkyo will work very well with speakers at the next level up.
Toslink Cables
I'm using a glass Toslink cable between an Airport Express and Benchmark DAC that I bought here from member Captnstarstripe. It's nicely made and seems to work perfectly. I think it's a real bargain at $40.
Has anyone had success converting friends?
I've helped several friends put together very nice systems after they became interested because of listening to my system. The difference between them and me, though, is that after they got their very nice system, they had absolutely no interest i...
Airport Express wav file vs CD played thru iTunes
I'm streaming wirelessly from iTunes on an iMac G5 through an Airport Express connected by glass toslink to a Benchmark DAC1 and then to my amplifier. WAV files, which, as Arm said, are uncompressed, Apple Lossless files and AIFF files, which are ...

Shipping Preparation for SACD Player
Good advice from Photon46. If the original packaging is rigid styrofoam it's useful for only one bump. It absorbs the impact but is crushed in the process and provides no protection in case of a second impact. That kind of packaging works well onl...
CD/SACD/DVDa player for new system
An alternative to the Oppo would be a used Denon 3910 or 2910. They've got good audio and video performance, are well-built machines and within your price range.
Ref 3A Veena - Devore Gibbon 8 - Audiophysic Yara
Classe30My room is 11 x 17, though the listening area is realistically 11x14, and the speakers are approximately centered on the long wall.I use two amp setups, depending on the season, a Simaudio I-5 integrated (solid state) and an AES Cary AE-25...
Ref 3A Veena - Devore Gibbon 8 - Audiophysic Yara
I have the Gibbon 8's and the bass is spectacular for such a small floorstander, better than three or four other similarly priced and highly regarded speakers I've had. I can't compare them with your other options, however. The Gibbons are one of ...
Safe Shipping, Fact or Fiction
One comment about original packaging materials; you have to evaluate the quality of them as part of your decision to ship. The rigid styrofoam that's often used may fit the gear and the box perfectly but it's good for only one encounter with gravi...
I got around $2000 to play with....
I'd second Hoopster's recommendation of a used Denon 2910 and the Onkyo A-9555 integrated. I own both and together they'd be extremely good for the money, leaving more of your budget for the speakers where a few more dollars will give you a wider ...
Speakers for Music Hall 25.2 cdp and amp????
Any of the ProAc speakers, either floorstanders or monitors, in your price range will sound great and maintain their resale value better than most brands.
