MSB Link DAC III vs. CAL Sigma
Joe B and Jab, where you using the earlier Sigma or the 24 / 96 Sigma II ? I think that there is a BIG difference in sound between those two. Sean>
Replacing internal wiring.
Xiekitchen, what kind of silver solder ? Some of it won't melt or bond for ANYTHING. I use an 800* tip and some silver based solders still won't "grab" very well on some metals.I have re-wired amps, preamps, speakers, etc... Sometimes, the results...
LISTENER Magazine...What Do You Think?
Upon first subscribing, i found much of it childish and aimed at a very small segment of the market. Upon further examination a few issues down the road, i find it childish and aimed at a very small segment of the market : )None the less, i do get...
Amplifier Orientation?
Power tubes should NEVER be run horizontally unless the amp / tubes were designed to do so. Not only does this create hot spots on the tube due to uneven cooling, the plates can sag over time and short out. Some tube manufacturers in the old days ...
What's the best Preamp??
I listened to the MC12 with the latest Lexicon power amps in what was a very expensive and custom designed system by a local hi-end / HT shop. The speaker placement was SOOO poor that i instantly new that i had to disregard any opinions from that ...
A question of spikes...
My suggestion is to contact Paul Barton and see what he has to say about it. After all, who better to talk to than the guy that designed and built the product ??? He should know what will / won't make those speakers sing better than anyone. Sean>
Long Digital cable or Long ICs
I agree with Brian for the exact reasons mentioned. Line loss still occurs with ANY long cable, but the longer run of digital can actually help to reduce the impact that reflected waves would have on the signal. Sean>
MSB Link DAC III vs. CAL Sigma
The MSB in stock form is definitely brighter sounding whereas the CAL sounds noticeably "tubey" i.e. warm and romantic. Since you already appear to be on that side of the spectrum, the MSB might be a better choice. It will add a somewhat transisto...
Digital cable v. standard interconnects
Ezmeralda is correct but all cable impedances are "nominal". In other words, they can vary with frequency. You can actually use any interconnect as a "digital" cable. Since "digital" is basically an RF based signal, i would recommend something that...
Have you tried "doping" your speaker cones?
Thanks for the clarification Will. Sean>
Two subwoofers??
Stehno, out of curiosity, do you know where the 18" driver in the Bag End "bottoms out" at ? For the record, it's something like 70+ Hz. They electronically manipulate the signal from there. While their specific approach is slightly different, thi...
apt holman problems
When is the last time that you inspected your ground connection between TT and preamp ? Wires from cartridge to headshell ? Interconnects from TT to preamp ?If all of those are good, try checking the AC orientation of all of your components to mak...
Best Speakers/ Mini monitors USED 5K
For their size, i REALLY liked the little Legend two-ways. Those little "bookshelf" speakers made more music than just about any other "tiny" speaker that i've recently heard. Like most other "esoteric high-end brands", they are pretty expensive f...
Anyone with parralel line conditioner experience?
Can't speak for all of the different models out there, but some can measurably and demonstrably lower the noise coming into the system. Sean>
OK to place amp on top of subwoofer?
I think that with the weight of an amp on them and vibration eminating directly below the bearings, the bearings would effectively couple the vibrations to the amp. I would think that using something that had a high absorption / damping factor wou...
