SS amps. Why so much power?
Jtinn, how do you measure "preferences" of electronic devices ? What are you basing your criteria on to say what it likes best ? If it is simply measurable power output, you will find an impedance where an amp will peak at and then fall off both b...
SS amps. Why so much power?
Well, i know that i can still very easily hear 15 KHz at about the same amplitude that i can hear 1 KHz ( give or take ). 17 KHz is there, but not as strong. I should probably go in for a hearing test sometime soon. I know that i had some slight i...
How grills affect?
According to Joseph D'Appolito ( and i quote ): "The grille is there only for cosmetic effect and to protect the drivers from prying fingers. The perfect grille is still the Holy Grail of speaker design". The article that he stated this in shows t...
SS amps. Why so much power?
Jtinn, NO amps really "like" low impedance loads. While it is true that SS amps typically deal with low impedances in a more linear fashion than tube amps do ( and high impedances vice-versa ), they ALL suffer from reduced damping factor, increase...
SS amps. Why so much power?
David, no "headbanger" would ever be satisfied with a 30 wpc amp ( regardless of make, model or designer ) and 92 dB speakers. Either the amp would be smoked from overdrive or the tweeters and mids would be cooked from clipping. As to "who's gonna...
To switch or not to switch.....
Good phono stages and linear tracking have come a long way. Add that to better record cleaning methods and higher technology stylus shapes and you've got a whole new world in front of ( or is it behind ??? ) you. Sean>
What is the best DB level to
I guess that we should take note of this and remember it. Obviously, some of us have VERY different ideas of what is "loud" and what isn't. When i want to rock, things get cranked. It looks like most of you would be holding your ears and shudderin...
MSB Link DAC III vs. CAL Sigma
Thanks for the update Mike. It just goes to show how system and personal taste dependent these things can be. I also think that the "mystery" of production tolerances from unit to unit can come into play. I have two Sigma's ( one earlier version, ...
Alice and Chains
What a way to go. Junked up to the point that you kill yourself and they find you so rotted that they can't identify the body. I guess that's where "denying your maker" will get you...... Sean>
buzzzzz, where did i go wrong?
My guess is that the two seperate ground rods need to be tied together. If the FIM's have a common ground, then all of the grounds are tied back to the other system via the conduit. As such, you may need to tie the two isolated system ground rods ...
Ohm Speakers, thoughts?
Hififile, thanks for confirming my previous statements. I'm glad that you took the same stance that i did as far as saying it all boils down to enjoying the music. My main problem with the whole "Ohm ordeal" is that they are marketing their curren...
Try this simple DIY interconnect cable.
The late Harvey Rosenberg of Listener and NY Audio Labs popularized a similar design many years ago. You could just as easily twist the two wires around each other, creating a twisted pair. Since they are enameled, you don't have to worry about th...
What is the best DB level to
Stehno, my post was not meant as a challenge to your statements in the least. My comments were based on what one would hear at a live event. Since i've never heard violins roaring at 110 dB's, it would normally come across as "un-natural" to say t...
Battle of the "Davids"......Belles vs. Berning
I think that you or any other locals should read the responses AFTER you go to the Chicago Audio Society meeting being held today. Here's a link for more info. Sean>www.chicagoaudio.org
Resonance problem with tonearm/cartridge
The only way to correct this is to lighten the mass of the arm / cartridge combo to raise the resonance of the two. Otherwise, you'll have to get into other much more involved ways of damping the resonance. You might want to contact Kevin at KAB E...
