Best Recordings I heard in 2001
Hi, Sara: Thanks for the nice note in response. I've gotten several private E-mails recently from Audiogon readers that bought the Mark Gridley book, and they have all been enjoying it. It would be nice if the book weren't priced as a college text...
Audio tip for aging male audiophiles
Lorne: what a great post! Thanks for the laughs -- a little humor to start the New Year is really appreciated.
Optical burn-in?
Short answer: no, TOSLINK cable does not need "burn in" time. Just plug it in and use it. The only caution you need to exercise is that you do not put a kink or severe bend in the cable, as this may cause micro-fractures in the optic fiber.
Best thread poster for 2001?
Thanks for the nice words, guys. It's been a privelege to be a regular participant on this forum, and it has brought me a lot of pleasure during the past year. Although I've never met any of you personally, I feel as though I know many of you. I n...
600 used speakers?
At the risk of being redundant, I am also going to suggest a used pair of Vandersteen 2Ce's. I'll crawl out on a limb here and say that for around $750, I don't think you can do better than a pair of used Vandy 2Ce's, particularly given your appar...
Happy New Year
Hi, Charlie. Thanks for the good wishes. I lost my job on December 21st, so I am certainly one of those who's hoping for better things in 2002. I appreciated your posts to A-gon during the past year, and I am still enjoying the Lyle Lovett sampler...
Opinions on Speakers and SSP's
You don't indicate your budget, so I'll make my suggestion based on a cost less than $3000 (MSRP). I have owned and listened to a lot of speakers over the 35+ years I've been an audiophile -- and I keep recommending Vandersteens when people want a...
Need New Cartridge Recommendation
If I'd been the first person to respond to your thread, I would also have suggested the Shure V15VxMR. (One note: the Shure has an output of 3.0 mV, not 4-5 as noted above.) But, since I'm not the first, I'll add the other suggestion I would have ...
Best Shearing Recordings
I own several Shearing recordings -- some on Concord, plus some previous labels. My personal favorite continues to be a recording from around 1960, "George Shearing in San Francisco", which I think was issued on the Capitol label.
Audiophile's New Year Resolutions?
My audiophile New Year's resolution is to not buy any more gear in 2002 -- except for the stuff I either want or need.
Best Amp for Vandy 3A's under 3000 Used?
I am currently using a Bryston 4B-ST with my Vandy 3A Signatures, and am very pleased with the combination. I have read that Richard Vandersteen likes to use McCormack amps with the 3A Sig's and the Model 5.
200w/ch stereo amps: best 1 for under 2000 used?
Hi, Lotus: I am a very satisfied owner of the Bryston 4B-ST, and can heartily recommend it. If you decide to buy the 4B-ST, drop me a line and I will give you contact info on the dealer where I bought mine at a substantial discount (less than $180...
Adcom 545 amp vs 545II
Guy: don't know if you will see this follow-up, but I was thinking some more about your question. If you are going to upgrade to another amp, and something with 100-125 watts provides enough juice, then you might want to spend a bit more money and...
Any audio gifts for Christmas?
In late November, I bought myself a pair of used Vandersteen 2Wq subs as early Xmas gifts -- one from my local Vandy dealer, and the other from a very nice seller on A-gon. HUGE improvement to the system, and a great combination with the Vandy 3A ...
Best of the holidays to all...
I want to follow Joe's words with a few of my own, thanking all of the regulars on this forum (Garfish, Swampwalker, Tireguy, AVGuyGeorge, Rcprince, Sara, Sean, and many others -- yes, even Cornfedboy) for the shared views and camaraderie over the...
