CD Changer w/ Variable Analog Out ?
Not sure what your budget is, but you might look at the Adcom. Their CD players used to have a analog volume control knob on the front panel, and their current CD players offer excellent sound for the price (particularly if you get them used.)
Anyone had Vandersteen 3's upgraded to 3A Sig?
I had my pair of Vandy 3A's upgraded to 3A Sig's about two years ago and was very pleased with the added refinement, transparency, and imaging that the upgrade provided. I'm confident that the change from the original Model 3 to the 3A Sig would b...
3 Brit players around 2,000 retail-which wins?
I have owned/heard only two of these units -- the Creek and the Rega. Of the two, I personally preferred the sound of the Rega, although I liked the cosmetics of the Creek better. Based on the review articles I've read of these three units, the co...
Bryston amps VS the rest... too clear and neutral?
Based on my experience with my Bryston 4B-ST and 5B-ST amps, I think that the "ST" line essentially reproduces accurately whatever is on the recording -- good or bad. I recall a remark by Stevie Wonder about the Bryston amps he uses in his home re...
top 5 operas?
I can't make a decision on 5 operas, so I have picked my 4 favorite composers of operas and their works that I enjoy most: 1. Puccini: Tosca; La Boheme2. Verdi: La Traviata; Rigoletto; Aida 3. Mozart: Don Giovanni; The Marriage of Figaro 4. Wagner...
Attention: Dunlavy Audio Labs out of business
The impending demise of Dunlavy has been mentioned on Audiogon over the past 6 months or so. Guess it's finally official. Too bad -- John Dunlavy designed fine speakers (among a small group making time- and phase-accurate speakers), and ran a very...
The Heat Is On
I am not aware of any wood care products that are applied after the primary finish that will block UV. Some finishes, such as varnish, have little or no UV blocking ability -- infact some, such as spar varnish, will darken considerably when expose...
Amp and preamp impedance
The respective output impedances of a preamp and the input impedances of a power amp will typically be different for tube units vs. solid state units. Further, the input impedance for solid state amps will also differ between single-ended (RCA) co...
The Heat Is On
Good comment about the beeswax, 4Yanx. Most of the commercial paste waxes, including the ones I mentioned, use a blend of waxes. Beeswax is used as an ingredient because it has a low melting temperature -- 140 degrees -- whereas carnauba wax melts...
Please help with selecting an AV receiver
Hi, Sara (Sc53). It's been some time since I've seen you post here. Must be the day for it: Cornfedboy (aka Kelly) posted either today or late yesterday, for the first time in some months.Your suggestion about the Outlaw receiver is a very good on...
The Heat Is On
Hi, Kelly!! Good to have your comments back on Audiogon -- it's been pretty dull without your wit!I want to elaborate on one of Sean's comments about woodcare. Among my various hobbies, I am an avid woodworker and carver (mostly Northwest coast na...
I need 'decent' speakers for my cheap system
There is a pair of Vandersteen 2Ce Signatures for sale right now here on Audiogon (see the featured ads at the top of the sales listings). They're priced at $980, and you won't do any better for the price.
volume/transparency ?
From my own experience, I've found that most speakers don't "take off" until they are played at medium volume or higher. I suspect this due to the amount of energy needed to overcome the inertia of the driver, and to properly damp the speaker. Thi...
Floating the Ground
I can't offer a lot of help beyond what John has suggested, but I do have one thought: try installing the ground loop isolator (GLI) that Radio Shack sells before you spend $100 on the Mondial unit. My son had a hum problem similar to the one you ...
budget split between cart and phono stage
Bomarc's comments are very relevant. I'd go beyond his remarks to add that the phono stage can make a huge difference, since it must take a very weak current generated by the cartridge and amplify it in a very linear fashion before passing the sig...
