where to start
Get a MacBook Pro but load your music on a firewire-connected external hard drive. Buy Pure Music ($129) as your music player; it sits on top of iTunes and works with it so you can play high-rez FLAC files through Pure Music which you ordinarily c...
USB cables
I recently purchased a new USB DAC (North Star USB DAC32) and initially tried the Audioquest Cinnamon USB cable. It sounded OK but the connection was not good and the cable would come unplugged causing kernel panic in my MacBook Pro. I upgraded to...
BAT, ARC or Ayre for my Genesis 500's?
Well after a lot of pondering I decided to go with an all-BAT tube system: VK55SE monoblocks and VK32SE preamp. Victor of BAT and Gary (?) of Genesis were consulted and felt these amps would be a good match with my 500's. I have placed my order wi...
BAT, ARC or Ayre for my Genesis 500's?
Just read a recent Stereophile article on the lack of retail high end dealers anymore. I am lucky in the DC area to have several high end shops still in existence. However, I am limited to what they carry (which is good stuff, but still...) and ca...
BAT, ARC or Ayre for my Genesis 500's?
Driver--yes that's the V-3 amp I used with my Beethovens! I still haven't forgotten how good that combo sounded. I have since owned the AX-7e integrated but ended up preferring the ARC tubes with my ProAc's (living room system). I will have to fin...
Help diagnose problem with my amp
Again, thanks for the suggestions. This is a SS not tube unit. I have contacted Myryad tech support in UK and hope to hear something from them. I really love this amp so hope I can get it repaired. I have no local stereo repair place and am not su...
Help diagnose problem with my amp
No I didn't change my speakers! Yes I wondered if a resistor or transistor had blown, but one that affects both channels. The amp is 10-15 yrs old I think, not sure, bought used.
Amp for Genesis 500's?
Thanks for the responses; I am glad to see there are some other Genesis fans out there! You don't hear much about Genesis but the sound of my 500's is the one thing I never find fault with or get tired of. I agree with Mooch, I think I can use les...
headphone amp
"If you want a tube amp the brand Single Power is worth checking out." NO do not even think of Singlepower! Please read all the threads on head-fi.org about Mikhail's dangerous shoddy engineering and fraudulent business practices. He has disappear...
Help me down grade
Invest in a Squeezebox with a nice tube integrated and small speakers by ProAc or Spendor--you will be amazed at the kind of sound you can get with such a system. Buy used!
Company loyalty- What has been your favorite?
Absolutely agree about ECM records. Also Speakers Corner vinyl releases sound stunning. As for manufacturers--Audio Research for outstanding customer service over the years (I've owned one or more of their products over the past 22 years). Also rec...
Buying used vs. New
I've bought (and sold) a lot of used gear here and have been extremely lucky. But stuff can and does get damaged in shipping and sometimes gear fails before you are ready to get rid of it! These are the risks we take, and like someone said, most t...
PC Audio Choice: Mac+USB, Transporter, or Squeezbx
I recommend the Squeezebox (classic model, otherwise called the Squeezebox 3) and a nice DAC--I use a Benchmark. Don't both with an "anti-jitter filter," but do find an upgraded or modded power supply (check out Bolder Mods for that). Much less ex...
Thin record and thin sound?
How would I even adjust VTA on my Linn LP12 (Ekos tonearma and Akiva cartridge)? I don't mean to hijack thread but I also have many thin records, along with lots of newer thick ones. Do I have a way to figure out and adjust VTA on my 'table?
Hi end ear buds
Also wanted to add: the classifieds at head-fi.org are a goldmine for finding and trying lightly used earbuds and headphones. Trying used earbuds may sound gross, but they always come with new unused tips so they are worth exploring. You can try v...
