Most Effective Tweaks Quality power conditioning made the biggest, most audible improvement to my two systems. I use the Ensemble Isolinks and their powercords.
Devendra Banhart - Anybody listening ? I'd say Sufjan Stevens also qualifies as "freak folk." Second Iron and Wine, too. Also--anything by Bonnie Prince Billy or Tortoise (same guy).
New CDP vs. older used and more expensive player I've often used older players since I'm not a fan of super upsampling unless it's really state of the art and super $$$. My favorite is the Electrocompaniet ECD-1 (that DOES upsample but sounds wonderful and warm anyway). If you are looking at the...

Which integrated with Harbeths and Ayre CX-7e Got to second the recommendation for the Ayre AX-7 integrated (or AX-7e if you can find it used). The synergy (with balanced cable) between the CD player and amp is just incredible. There is more than enough power in the Ayre amp, it sounds like a...
REcomendations for a compact 5 channel amplifier? I find the Acurus 125 x 5 very compact yet powerful in my bedroom HT system. Cheap on the used market too.
Sistrum Platforms under floor standing speakers I have been using the bigger platforms under my Genesis 500's for several years now and have not had a tipping problem. It was hard as hell to lift those heavy monster speakers onto the Sistrums, but once we did, and got the platform spikes more o...
Who makes the narrowest SACD player? The Music Hall Maverick is quite compact and plays CDs with or without upsampling as well. It's a great sounding player. I haven't measured it but it's quite a bit less wide than the other standard components in my rack.

Audio's Most Enduring Products. Audio Research VT100 and my Genesis 500's. Expensive then but well worth it. No desire to upgrade.
Custom Signal Cable vs. REL Stock Neutrik Speakon? I bought an upgraded speakon cable for my REL Storm III because the original cable developed a loud buzz. The replacement cable has never malfunctioned and I thought improved the bass definition as well.
Good "Link" between SP9 Mk III and ProAc 1SC Look for a used ARC tube amp within your price range. ARC and ProAc = MAGIC! Lots of threads on this combo, BTW.
Is there anything better then Sunday Morning Jazz? Every Sunday morning from 9 am-noon my local jazz public radio station plays a show called "G Strings." It's great, quiet, thoughtful jazz, and I listen with my coffee, NY Times and Wash Post, and messed up hair all morning just as you describe. I...
killer violin tracks. I have been listening to a great piece w/violins and cello by Boccherini called "La musica notturna di Madrid." It's on the Master and Commander soundtrack if you can't find it on a classical recording. I also have a recording of it on an Ensayo C... |
