Passive preamp vs. powered I would like to add that building a volume control that sounds the same at all levels is expensive and/or difficult. Just stick a pot in the front of your system and listen. This is a good reason to use a digital volume control when you can.
Passive preamp vs. powered I have owned, built, and heard many passive preamps, and they all shared the advantage of clarity at the expense of dynamics. You pays your money......
Class-D or switching amps, any opinions on?? I thought the question was "Does anybody have experience on Class-d or switching amps vs either a/b or traditional amps??" The question seemed general enough, not technical in nature. "true digital" seems to me as elusive as "true class A". Hard t...
Class-D or switching amps, any opinions on?? I have been using the Tact digital amps for sometime. The lower noise floor has allowed me to understand words in familiar songs which had been previously buried in the mix while using tubes and class a/b solid state. I interchanged the Tact with ...
Speaker Hum on my Quad 12L Active's My 12L's never hummed as long as I used them with my stereo which was all located at the same end of the room. When I tried them in home theater plugged in to the opposite end of the room from my receiver, they hummed loudly. I assumed it was beca...
Speaker Hum on my Quad 12L Active's Are the power cords plugged into the same circuit? To test, use an extension cord and plug them into the same outlet.
What is the chain of importance in analog system ? I see lots of folks with inexpensive arms using expensive moving coils and living with noise and hum which overwhelm my poor ears. I am running a $250 moving magnet cart with a $ 2000 turntable, a $1000 arm, $400 silver interconnects fed into a $2...
Audioquest Clear 2 Hyperlitz? Make certain that they have the original factory ends and not some soldered replacements. Do not buy them if they are not factory original. If you look carefully, you should at least be able to see if the the two ends are the same. If so, they are...
Analog Tuner Existence..... There are so many excellent tuners out there for $200-$400, why buy a collectors piece and worry? I have had an MR-71, a full Audio Classics mod MR-77, a Fanfare 1A, etc. over the years. I now have a Marantz 7001, and a Sherwood 3000 lll, with les...
Suggestions for 'filling the port' of bass reflex I had good results cutting soda straws to the length of the port and then simply packing it full. This reduces turbulence and overload without changing the tuning of the port. Using fabric, wool etc. impede the air movement is not only a gamble, w...
Downsize to Digital Integrated Amplifiers? There are many switching amplifiers but few digital ones. The few actual digital amplifiers have some limitations. They tend to be load sensitive, much like tube amps. A measurement of voltage across my speaker outputs showed a huge drop in gain a...
Downsize to Digital Integrated Amplifiers? I have been here for the future before (Tubes to transistors, transistors to IC'sStereo tapes to records, records to CD's, reflex speakers to air suspension etc.). Gets cheaper, smaller and more convenient, but almost never better sounding.
Retubing power amp Since you are not experienced with tubes you definitely need expert help. Spend a little time reading on Audio Asylum. They discuss who to order tubes from, and the symptoms of tube decay. Naturally, the manufacturer will be happy to sell you a ne...
TacT users- Help My Quad subs have specs that say -6 DB @ 25HZ. I set the Tact menu at 30HZ for measurements. My subs have several built in crossover selection points. I selected 55HZ because I measured my main speakers by themselves, saw them peak at 80HZ (at abo...
TacT users- Help You are thinking exactly right. I too could find no information on this problem. I have been using my Tact 2.0S with subs for a couple of years using the second line output (with a bal to unbal adapter) from the Tact. I have also tried the speaker... |
