Why are Harbeth speakers expensive while its drivers are not.
Why single out Harbeth?  Like every other speaker out there, price is set by what the consumer is willing to pay, not the cost of manufacture.  People have money to burn and these guys cater to them.
Which is the Better Tonearm - Pro-Ject or Rega?
Williewonka, that link talks about weldments and welded joints etc.  Please, this is not relevant to the topic at hand.  I design pressure vessels for a living, I know my materials as well as the quality of castings coming out of China (we buy by ...
Which is the Better Tonearm - Pro-Ject or Rega?
Ok, as an engineer, I feel obliged to chime in.  Castings are cheaper than bar or tubing.  Tubing and bar, forged or rolled, have more uniform density than castings. Even if the most advanced casting technics are used, you will still have some int...
Which is the Better Tonearm - Pro-Ject or Rega?
I am sure the OP is not interested in a $1K+ modded arm.  Going back to comparing the Pro-ject and Rega arms, I have used both types.  The Rega is longer and should have lower tracking error.  The Pro-ject antiskate setup is not that great but the...
Ancient AR Turntable with NO anti skate
Norman, your final check/adjustment should be with mono LP to make sure you have even output from both channels and music is coming from the central region between speakers.  Assuming that your room acoustics don't produce an uneven balance to beg...
Ancient AR Turntable with NO anti skate
The skating force is a component of the friction force vector so it is dependent on the tracking force and the offset angle.  Friction in turn is also dependent on the groove surface, contact area of the stylus, etc.  Back in the day, some manufac...

And that is why designers use a spring or magnet for antiskate in many of the tonearms.  It is to vary the amount of the bias force as the arm gets closer to the spindle.  Saying we don't provide an antiskate mechanism because the skating force ch...
Ancient AR Turntable with NO anti skate
Well, you could purposely not level the TT such that the tonearm drifts in the outward direction when zero balancing the arm.  That can help get by without a bias mechanism.  If everything is correctly set-up and the tonearm bearings don't produce...
Materials to reduce sidewall flex & vibration ?
Hello rotarius. I appreciate your suggestions are very relevant so likely youhave some knowledge. Do you have some more specific suggestions? Thanks. It's hard to be specific because induced vibration and resonances are so dependent on the mass...
Ancient AR Turntable with NO anti skate
Hello norman, I don't see why one would not apply the antiskate bias if this feature is available.  The skating force exists for every pivoting arm used with any stylus.  It is a vector quantity, very real, not some alternative fact.
Materials to reduce sidewall flex & vibration ?
Ptss, I suggest you read up on vibration theory, natural frequency and resonance before you attempt anything.  A engineering resource to be more specific.  I don't think you will gain much by just sticking other materials to mdf panels without an ...
Technics SL1200: standard overhang gauge or MintLP
It's not Stevenson but it's close if you set the Stevenson inner groove radius at 57.5 mm which is then the inner null point. The Technics alignment inner null point is 58.8 mm if I recall correctly. I have set up carts both ways and the differenc...
Technics SL1200: standard overhang gauge or MintLP
Spencer, the offset angle is precisely set  if the cantilever is straight and cart is square.  Why even buy a cart with a crooked cantilever?  You can easily measure how parallel the cantilever is to the cart axis. How accurate can you get eyeball...
Technics SL1200: standard overhang gauge or MintLP
If you need to square up a cart in a headshell why would you not use the precision of digital calipers to measure distance of each side of a cart to the headshell edge?  I am an engineer, I like to confirm with actual measurements rather than eyei...
Technics SL1200: standard overhang gauge or MintLP
@sbank, you don't need a cart to be rectangular or have parallel sides, all you need is symmetrical sides and a measuring tool like calipers.  I do agree, the cantilever needs to be in line with the cart axis.  Eyeballing with lines on a mirror is...
