Should I buy a new amplifier; and if so, what? $3,000 to replace caps? Brutal.
Tube preamp recommendation ... With regard to the Dodd buffer, note that it is a passive which can be highly system dependent. Very transparent, but a passive can also have diminished dynamics, drive and oomph. This is what I found with the Dodd in my system, though in other re...
Best speaker design for low to mid volume? In general I find that more efficient speakers are also better at low volume than speakers of lower efficiency. A minimal crossover might be the reason for that (more technically able A'goners correct me if I am wrong on that). Also contributing t...
Whats more important, source cables or amp cables? I have found the most important cable in my system to be from my phono cart to the phono pre. Likely due to the small signal involved (especially from a LOMC).But in general +1 to what Al said.
Noise eater Be curious in hearing impressions of folks who have tried various models of these types of devices. Pulled the trigger on a Blue Circle implementation (BC86 or something like that). Hasn't arrived just yet.
Amplifier power versus maximum speaker input power Input sensitivity is something that I find myself having a harder time getting my head around than gain in dB. And I am not clear on if input sensitivity can give an idea of the amount of gain in dB (and what other specs might be needed to calcula...
Favourite ECM Titles Thanks for the rec Russellrcncom. Will see if I can find it on vinyl
Speaker noises Sounds like a ground loop to me.
Amplifier power versus maximum speaker input power Markpao, Your problem with the amount of travel on your volume control is related to the gain of your amp, not its power. The importance of accounting for the amount of gain in systems is sadly often overlooked (damping factor is another aspect of...
Favourite ECM Titles My biggies: Dave Holland "Emerald Tears" (incredible solo bass)Gateway- first two albumsAnd an unusual Kieth Jarrett is Spheres, where he performs on an organ (not a Hammond B3, think cathedral type organ).
Top 5 Hamburgers Oh hell yes, I am getting a burger at Kumas Kitchen tonight. Check the review in the most recent Tone Audio magagzine (free online PDF). And for those of you in the LA area, check out the burger at Father's Office. Wow.
Tube Integrateds...why not a preout for subs..... I believe that the Grant Fidelity tube integrated has pre outs, but I hear you in general. I'd also suggest speaker level inputs, particularly RELs. This is their recommended connection and RELs integrate very nicely via their Speakon to speaker o...
Dynavector XV-1S ---is it overkill for my system? Stringreen, Can you tell us why? HOMCs are often considered less than ideal, if you have a quality phono stage for LOMC carts. What's your logic?
rega P5 with dynavector 10x5..which phono? Big fan of the P75. Worked great with MM carts before I moved to a LOMC that could use the PE mode. And there may be Dyna synergy. Haven't tried the GCPH, but in my system preferred P75 to Vincent PHO-8 and Quicksilver tubed phono pre.
DAC for Exposure 2010s+Harbeth compact 7 Tons of great DAC options out there. Of which the EE Minimax is certainly one. Can you give us an idea of your ideal budget, and an idea of any features you would like, or characteristics of music that you are most drawn to? |
