Biamping B&W 802 with Musical Fidelity and Bryston
The Bryston would be light years ahead of the Adcom, even though you're only talking about the lows. Are you certain the Toshiba is not the source of the harshness? Do you have an analog source available(TT or tuner) for comparison? Any triode bas...
Best current EL34 tubes
If you buy the Winged "C"(which I would also recommend): be certain they are the newer ones(from the St Petersburg plant) and not someone's older stock. You won't find a more dependable seller than Upscale. Check out his test/burn-in procedures(li...
Speaker cables for soundlabs and strong current
I'd second the Kimber 8TC(and who would know better than the system's designer, what would work best). An excellent, easy to work with and fairly heavy gauge(8) cable. It should virtually disappear in a short run(the best quality a cable can posse...
While listening to my system my Rhea blew up
Film dielectric breakdown, possibly from over voltage condition, high peak current or over temperature. When a cap breaks down, hydrogen is generated inside. PC mounted caps have "vents" (grooves) in their tops that are supposed to let this pressu...
How do you connect your single wire and jumpers ?
The possiblity of your being able to hear a difference between having the cable on the high, low or diagonal posts are somewhere between zero and none. The only possibility being if you have REALLY cheesy jumpers. In that case, doing the diagonal ...
While listening to my system my Rhea blew up
The smoke and pop sound like a capacitor.
Tubes?
YES- Mr A has nailed the ones that would be most desirable to an audio-tube user. If they are NOS, they could put some change in your pocket. You might try contacting Audio Classics(Vestal, NY), and asking if they would grade the tubes for you.
RadioShack Sound Meter
Point it up or it won't accurately read the SPL reflections from the back and side walls. Every reflection in the room affects the freq. response at your listening position. I suppose those calibrations would be of some value if there was any cons...
Golden Ear award for $55 speaker tweak
When I had my own shop, and designed my own speaker line: The systems that didn't incorporate a ribbon tweeter had the Peerless 1" dome(this was started in '81). I always added a 6" foam donut w/a 3" hole around the dome. They never rolled off the...
What capacitor values?
I haven't had any electrostatics since my Acoustat Model III's. But- I almost bought a pair of ML Sequels a few years back. A local store was blowing their last pair out for 1/2 price(whatta temptation that was). I've been using modded Maggies for...
What do you want from the hobby?
A very interesting read! I certainly envy the owner of that much(many) solidly constructed listening area(s). I totally can relate to the quest of seeing how much can be squeezed out of early technologies(especially tubed gear), and concur that ea...
What capacitor values?
Not at all. Just add the coil I mentioned in the previous post to roll the mid's top-end off, which will eliminate that peakiness from the reproduction and avoid a major overlap in reponses. Don't forget an inductor on the 12" to avoid the same in...
Where are you today?
I've been enjoying the liquid mid-range/3D imaging/transparency/realism of a tubed top-end(Cary SLM100's, modded) and the speed/definition/extension/power of a MOS-FET bottom-end for the past 19yrs(was a Hafler DH-500, now a TransNova 9505, both m...
Reliable Sources for 6SN7 Tubes
While you are shopping for 6SN7's: Don't miss the Sylvania CHS, VT-231, bottom getter tube from the 40's. It's extension(without grain), transparency, liquid mid-range, slam and imaging are far better than anything manufactured today. They look li...
What capacitor values?
I'm not certain of the response of your midrange, never having seen the data. BUT- Most don't operate smoothly up to 7500Hz. If you look at this response: (http://www.madisound.com/catalog/PDF/scanspeak/12m_4631g00e.pdf) You'll note how erratic th...
