What capacitor values? I haven't had any electrostatics since my Acoustat Model III's. But- I almost bought a pair of ML Sequels a few years back. A local store was blowing their last pair out for 1/2 price(whatta temptation that was). I've been using modded Maggies for...
What do you want from the hobby? A very interesting read! I certainly envy the owner of that much(many) solidly constructed listening area(s). I totally can relate to the quest of seeing how much can be squeezed out of early technologies(especially tubed gear), and concur that ea...
What capacitor values? Not at all. Just add the coil I mentioned in the previous post to roll the mid's top-end off, which will eliminate that peakiness from the reproduction and avoid a major overlap in reponses. Don't forget an inductor on the 12" to avoid the same in...
Where are you today? I've been enjoying the liquid mid-range/3D imaging/transparency/realism of a tubed top-end(Cary SLM100's, modded) and the speed/definition/extension/power of a MOS-FET bottom-end for the past 19yrs(was a Hafler DH-500, now a TransNova 9505, both m...
Reliable Sources for 6SN7 Tubes While you are shopping for 6SN7's: Don't miss the Sylvania CHS, VT-231, bottom getter tube from the 40's. It's extension(without grain), transparency, liquid mid-range, slam and imaging are far better than anything manufactured today. They look li...
What capacitor values? I'm not certain of the response of your midrange, never having seen the data. BUT- Most don't operate smoothly up to 7500Hz. If you look at this response: (http://www.madisound.com/catalog/PDF/scanspeak/12m_4631g00e.pdf) You'll note how erratic th...
Tubes? +1 for Mr A's advice. Further- The majority of musical instrument amp repairmen own tube testers, as tubes are widely used in music/sound gear. Check your yellow pages, and make a couple calls.
What capacitor values? Mr H- No risk at all. It would bring the mid in at about 1kHz which is probably closer to the the neighborhood of the 12's natural roll-off. See if you can find the data on your 12". Often that will supply you with a freq response plot. Check it's...
What capacitor values? If you like the sound: Leave it as is! You've no one to please but yourself. Based on the impedances you gave, the values/points/slopes should be as noted. I was suggesting what generally works well for x-over points. Especially with a 12"/5 1/4"/...
What capacitor values? Well- That would bring your tweeter in a little above 10kHz, and your mid- right about 4kHz. The mid isn't doing much midding that way. I'd say 80uF on the mid(500Hz) and about 5.5uF on the tweeter(about 5kHz). I suppose if you were to go with an ...
Lack of depth problem Speaking of bass: depending on where those subwoofers are in relation to the mains- a time shift can screw up your sound stage also. There's a lot a ambience info in the bottom octaves. Try moving them into alignment with the mains as an experiment.
What capacitor values? If those speakers are 8ohm: the 200uF cap will cross at 100Hz and the 1.76uF over 10kHz. If they are 4ohm drivers: 200uF= 200Hz, and 1.766uF=somewhere over the rainbow, I mean- over 20kHz. I seriously doubt the mid-range actually has the ability t...
Lack of depth problem Better make those "your" ears!
Tact Audio Great Service Here is one of the threads that I responded to over two years ago(way before Mr G's issues/rants surfaced): (http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?aamps&1166278482&read&keyw&zztact) You'll notice that I mentioned their service as...
Lack of depth problem Hello Vett93: I've used the VT-231(IF it's the bottom getter tube from the 40's), and it is an excellent tube with regard to clarity, imaging, dynamics, etc. Actually I'm saving them for back-ups now. I did find more depth of stage with the Sylvan... |
