Bolero:why can't my system reproduce snare well?
To be clear; the medium to which you listen(vinyl, CD, master tape) is not as important as the mic technique(as mentioned by Lowrider), Recording Engineer's ears, mastering or pressing. There are more poor recordings out there, than high quality/a...
Bolero:why can't my system reproduce snare well?
Ditto on the recording quality being suspect. Snares(and drums in general) are difficult to record, regarding the capture of their dynamic potential/impact. The vinyl version of this album was recorded Direct-to-Disc and is now almost impossible t...
Cleaning melted plastic from MC275 chrome surface
One of Goo Gone's primary purposes is paint(spills/over spray) removal. The OP mentioned wanting to retain the chassis' lettering. I'm guessing that lettering would be silk-screened(paint/ink). Also; Goo Gone is a pretty mild solvent. Plastics gen...
5AR4/GZ34 Rectifier Tubes
If anyone let's you, "try out" any NOS tubes; you MUST have a VERY GOOD friend(in heaven)! Especially tubes as rare and expensive, as the Tung-Sol roundplates. The bottom gettered Ken-Rad VT231, is not nearly as expensive/sought after, but: still ...
Hi-Fi Fuses - SNAKE OIL? - or something in it?
I would delete my last post, but- the site is not offering the option.
Hi-Fi Fuses - SNAKE OIL? - or something in it?
If I were using old Marantz gear and Altec speakers; I wouldn't worry about fuses either.
Audio Research d79 blows plate fuse
Hopefully; it's simply a tube. Another possibility is a leaky or shorted coupling capacitor(especially based on the age of the amp). If so; it will either be the 2uF or .22uF(bypass)/600V, mylars.

AH- The essence of Jeet Kune Do! Let your ears be like water and flow with the music. Especially those liquid midranges?
Bypass caps what value should I use.
YES; a bypass is paralleled. Bypass caps are generally just a small fraction the capacitance of what they are bypassing, changing the total very little. They can and will create phase aberrations, however. Better to replace the original, with one ...

Very well stated, Mr S!
Dynavector
When your cartridge was new; it retailed for $795. There have been four iterations since then(over 13 years), including new/improved models and various changes(ie: compliance, output, etc.). If it sounds good to you........
Arcane inquiry re 1960s speakers ad
I miss that rag. Wonder what form it would take today? I'd like to buy a truckload of Dynaco Stereo 70's, at the price advertised, in that issue.
Tweeter type and brightness
The better(more resolving) your tweeters and cables are; the more they will reveal shortcomings upstream(elsewhere in the system and recordings).
"Slam"--what is it, is it really accurate?
"Slam" isn't exactly a well defined word, in regards to audio. Similarly; some disagree when the term, "tight" is used, in reference to accurate bass. When you are referring to live music; one need not be very close to a drum set, to feel the sens...
Expensive cables/connector and solder
What Tim said X 2. Some cable manufacturers also use processes such as Cold Welding or Ultrasonic Welding, using no solders what-so-ever.
