Turntable got absolutely crushed by CD
MC cartridges need a good step-up transformer (SUT) for best sound! High-gain phono stages won't do! I know this from 40 + years of using MC cartridges! In fact, the best active head amp I heard was a Levinson JC-1 clone. It was very, very good wi...
SST Ampzilla 2000 v2 vs Son of Ampzilla II
These are both excellent amps! The last masterworks of James Bongiorno! I own several of his designs from SAE, GAS and Sumo. The Ampzilla 2000 from Spread Spectrum Technology will be an excellent match for your SC-IVa’s! Plenty of power - no need ...
Help with some Vintage gear???
$200 - $300 for the Grace 707 arm (I have two). $400 - $500 for the Ortofon MC2000. I'd keep both (and the tonearm cable) and use them on the Clear audio TT. Along with the Ortofon SUT! You will have truly excellent sound from your favorite LPs!

Same thing on my Snell Type E tweeters!
Please help! Tube amp issue
Try swapping the + and - leads of each speaker. The feedback loop using R9 and R23 may be positive (instead of negative) because you may have miss-wired the two input connectors!
Please help! Tube amp issue
The heater wiring carrying the 6.3 volts AC should be twisted pairs kept close to the chassis!
Please help! Tube amp issue
It would be a lot easier if you got a photo of that Magnavox amp and copied the parts layout and wiring scheme! Trying to build any amp (tube or transistor) from a schematic is not a guarantee of success! See my post above! It is always best to di...
Please help! Tube amp issue
Parts layout is very important in any amplifier design! Keeping the power supply/transformer away from the input stage, wire length and routing ... Grounding issues? Did you use star grounding (tieing all grounds to a single point on the chassis)?...
What will a preamp do for me?
Maybe the PS 4.6 would be more appealing if the price was $3995! Don't be fooled by the belief that "if it costs more it must be better"! That is a rabbit hole that too many have fallen into!
What will a preamp do for me?
There's a one-owner PS Audio 4.6 preamp for sale now on EBay. $395.95 and free-shipping from PA. Seller is "buy-wrightjtt". This is an excellent sounding preamp, equal to units costing thousands! I have owned two of its predecessor - the model IV....
Can you live with your current speaker until you die?
@shkong78 : I will bring a gasoline generator and ferment/distill vegetation to produce ethanol for fuel! And a SS amp (Bedini 25/25) plus a CD player with variable output, along with CDs. of course!
My first Tube Amplifier
@atomheart411: see my two posts above! I'd go for a pair of W5's or a nicely restored Dyna ST70 with 6L6/KT66 output tubes!
My first Tube Amplifier
Alternately, you could buy a nicely restored pair of Heath W5 mono tube amps. 6L6 PP with outstanding transformers (Peerless). A true classic! I have a pair, so it's an easy recommendation! Can be found on EBAY!
My first Tube Amplifier
The venerable 6L6 (late '30s) is an excellent output tube. Limited to about 20-25 watts for a PP pair. Its sound quality is limited to the make of the output transformer. Cheap ones, like in the Mesa Boogie, have problems with bass and high freque...
Top Ten Rock Vocalists
Tony Martin with Black Sabbath! Superior to Ozzy! Sadly unappreciated!
