What's your experience with snooty HiFi salesmen?
YIKES!  So sorry this happens to ANYONE.  When I opened my shop in the early 1970's, I was convinced I could help every customer who walked in.  I spent HOURS with each one, first getting to know them--it was a VERY small town back then--and then ...
Should I
Slightly different, but I built my Hafler 500 in 1975 from their kit.  Took it in to the local service guy who fixes everything and it measured perfectly except for a small bias adjustment.  Advised not to mess with it, and it sounds as good as it...
Female XLR to RCA?
Not to hi-jack the thread, but how about the other way?  Can you use an RCA-out pre-amp (ARC) with balanced-input ARC amps? Cheers!
Anything more resolving than 65 year-old speakers?
My experience with Quads is extreme listening fatigue at volume.  I switched to Maggies and got all the accuracy without the fatigue.  Of course, you need excellent hardware--typically tube--and they have to be set up properly.  I have never found...
Is soundstage DEPTH a myth?
ARC Hardware + Magneplaner speakers.  Good source recordings.  Try Sheffield direct-to-disc for an example YOUR ROOM has to be conducive to music reproduction accuracy. Cheers!
Stereo or monoblocks
I don't know for certain, but if someone would send me a pair of ARC 750 monos, I will be pleased to compare them to my current stereo amp.  Message me for my address...   Cheers!
What's all the fuss about late 70s and earl 80s run of the mill midfi turntables?
I had to laugh at the poster who had the BIC turntable...we used to sell them at my shop, along with the bouncy Thorns and Linn-Sondek.  I kind of liked the SP-10, and we sold some of those as well. Big issues with tone arms back then.  The Shure...
Are you interested in the new generation of "old school" design loudspeakers?
Interesting, and KLH speakers were good for their time. Henry Kloss went on to Advent as everyone knows. Advent’s were nice as well. For their time. HOWEVER, take a pair of those speakers and put them next to a similar modern box speaker and you ...
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often
Pretty much any speaker will PLAY with lower power, but also most good speakers, even "efficient" ones, will sound better with more power (this has nothing to do with the accuracy of the reproduction chain, of course; "loud" does not mean "accurat...
Selling on Audiogon
Never had any issues selling there.  Easy and fair. Choose a category, take a picture, and post. Cheers.
Solid copper or stranded copper for speaker cables? What is your choice and why?
I have no idea, but I do know this: For the same size, the current carrying capacity of solid wire is more than the stranded wire,  This mostly why we use it when wiring homes; it is also cheaper, of course. As for special speaker wire costing ...
Tubes or Solid State?
@dierksb  I understand.  I don't have $20,000 for a pre-amp either.  Keep looking.  Audio Mart has a few under $1000 and there are other sources.  Their dealers have trade-ins; list of dealers is easy to find.   E-Bay has several under $1000 as we...
What can beat Wilson XVX for less money?
Demo anything of equal price from Magnepan IN YOUR ROOM.  If you don't like them, at least you demo'd the best. Cheers!
Tubes or Solid State?
I suggest you try an ARC pre-amp.  If  you can't afford a new one, try a used one.  My SP6B is superb and will last a lifetime.  I got it used for under $800.00. If you have a local dealer, see if he or she can help you demo something from ARC in...
Women Who Rock
Only ONE mention of Janis?  You ever SEE her perform live? Where do you think all the others come from? Oh, some of Joan's inspiration came from Suzi, by the way.   Cheers!
