From Krell to McIntosh - Anyone?
Popsw/ all due respect, change your speaker cables from the MIT and you might notice the 501 characteristics more, particularly when you compare w/ a more linear amp. i do like the 501 amp. but much like my car, which i like, i recognize there's a...
From Krell to McIntosh - Anyone?
can't say i've heard krell in my system, but dave_b seems to have nailed the mac sound (though i'd disagree about "sterile"). see my review on dagogo.com for more on the 501s, but i can only imagine the krell will do far more at the extremes and h...
McIntosh vs. ARC
i think a mac on maggies would be a poor match. please see my review of the 501s on dagogo.com as to why.rhyno

FYI on my experiments:ground gauge is critical: i had 4*18 ga (effectively 12ga) on my XLR IC, and it was fat & a bit slow. cutting back to 13.5 ga made a huge difference in bass definition and speed. i wouldn't have believed it if i (and anot...
Best CD sleeves out there
i get the impression the jewelsleeves don't accomodate the tray card? and that the discsox DJ pro do?rc
DIY Interconnects review
Just thought i'd add some recent experiences to this thread:1) ground wire, as a friend reported to me, is extremely audible on XLRs. while sean was quite on point with his earlier comments to me re: volume shunt to ground (adding ground removed t...

i'm not familiar w/ WBT crimping. if it has a VERY strong mechanical connection, then it ought to be OK. soldering results in a very strong mechanical connection. as do screw terminals. crimiping usually applies uneven stress.rc
DIY Interconnects review
Dbld,it depends. if the contact area w/ screws is large enough and materials (metals) are good quality (i.e. brass / silver / copper, not nickel screws or steel), then screw is fine. otherwise, i'd go w/ solder. i'd never use crimping. Now, my expe...

jademy best wishes on your health, and my compliments on this excellent post.question: was there any break-in period given for any of the cables? IME, copper breaks in the fastest, tinned / plated copper takes longer, and silver cannot (!) break i...
Review: Einstein The Tube Linestage Tube preamp
the unit runs hot, but its not just the tubes; the trannys contribute to the heat output significantly. Guido, i found that a silent bathroom fan (think "broan" from lowe's at @ $100) placed above the equip rack will do wonders for keeping your ro...
Review: Einstein The Tube Linestage Tube preamp
jaybow/ all respect, there isn't but a couple studios around (think lucasfilm, but certainly not conventional recording studios!) that has the $$ equivalent of an einstein preamp, or top notch speakers like wilson, accapella, rockport, etc etc., s...
Review: Einstein The Tube Linestage Tube preamp
your comment jaybo only demonstrates a lack of experience. the finer components (read: more expensive) are more apt to prove you wrong than mid-fi stuff; once you get into uber-pricey gear, "character" becomes diminutive---as character is a euphem...
Syd Barret - RIP
i recently read in the BBC that at a Live8 reunion gig, just prior to striking up "wish you were here", gilmore was reported to say "this one is for everyone who couldn't be here tonight. especially Syd."i listened to that record last night. must ...
MBL 101e's vs. Soundlab U-1's
think about the waveform differential:monkey coffins: uses 1-4 woofers of 8-15" which travel anywhere from fractions of an inch to a couple inches (!) from start to stop. panels: whole panel, moves just fractions of an inch.again, panels will neve...
