Should Equalizers make a comeback?
Every time I use tone controls to tame highs or boomy bass, something sounds fundamentally wrong. As soon as I take the preamp tone controls out via the defeat switch, a level of distortion just disappears. The same thing happened when I used a hi...
Calling Harbeths 40.1 owners
I have SHL5s. Coming from Aerial 10Ts, Wilson WP6s and Kharma 3.2s, I do sense that the Harbeths are just masking some detail in pursuit of a non-stressful sound. On the other hand, I love the kind of fleshed-out vocals and nice saturation of soun...
Mac Mini versus PC sonic differences, why?
Quote from Ballan above:"If you do use a Mac Mini, having at least 4GB of RAM and a SSD will help it sound better. It's subtle, but an improvement. The SSD will definitely improve the overall performance and responsiveness of the Mac, and it's har...
Hydra 8 -- Normal for labels on back to wear off?
Thanks Jim. Grant at Shunyata told me not to worry about the paint issue. I will probably look into upgrading sometime, but the Hydra 8 (mine are from 2004) works wonders as is. I would be curious to hear from others what improvement come from the...
Hydra 8 -- Normal for labels on back to wear off?
Thanks Jim. I didn't know there was a version-2; I thought there was just the V-Ray version.
Hydra 8 -- Normal for labels on back to wear off?
OK, I looked closely at my other Hydra 8 that I bought new several years ago, and I noticed when looking closely slight paint imperfections, like the corner of some letters falling off. I think Shunyata has some paint issues. Does anyone else see ...
Hydra 8 -- Normal for labels on back to wear off?
Elizabeth, thank you very much for your help here.Yes, the serial number is fine. It is on a little gold plate that Shunyata now uses (I can see the same plate in pictures of other Hydras online.)
Hydra 8 -- Normal for labels on back to wear off?
RTN1 -- that's music to my ears! Thank you.Do you really think this could be normal? (Or at least not indicative of something bad?)I was speculating someone tried to clean it with an abarasive or a brush, or maybe it was close to a hot tube or cla...
Hydra 8 -- Normal for labels on back to wear off?
Thanks. Yeah, probably need to get a new one...
Any experience with the new EMM CDSA SE ?
I do not see any need to give up my CDSA indefinitely. If something isn't broke, I won't fix it (especially in the audio arena). The CDSA is so articulate, I can understand lyrics I never could on recordings I've heard for decades. But still the CD...
Kharma v Focal v Avalon
The other thing with the Kharma is that it is unforgiving of a recording, especially a tipped-up one, and there is not much you can do to fix that. It can sound as good as it gets or unlisteneble depending on the CD I used.As Culture Club said, Kh...
Gershman Black Swans vs Focal Scala Utopia
I have heard the Gershmans (the Black Swans) at the NY show a few years ago and recall that they were impressive and coherent and smooth, but the bass was too propulsive for the small hotel room at the demo, not as tight as I would like.
Kharma v Focal v Avalon
I would not buy the 3.2s w/o hearing them. They are not a set-it-and-forget-it speaker.
Reference 3a Grand veena or Duntech Sovereign
Tbg, thanks. My old Wilson WP6s made some vocals (especially on lesser recordings) actually sound like they had a buzzing overtone. I heard this same affect sometimes in some Wilson demos. I really hear this, but maybe it's just me.
Looking for warm sounding speakers
Harbeths (SHL5s at least) are certainly warmish, or certainly not cold/analytical at all, but at the cost of some detail/reach into the music, to my ears. If you are asking this question because you have been burned by too-much-info speakers be ca...
