Do we break in our componets or do our componets ?
I think TWL did rather well at avoiding being impolite, in circumstances where it is hard not to feel exasperated.Rsbeck, I approach all new claims that do not fit my preconceptions with a good deal of scepticism - perhaps even unhealthy scepticis...
Do we break in our componets or do our componets ?
I won't insist its reality, if you don't insist that because something is not explained by exixtsing knowledge, then it cannot be reality. No real scientist would be so closed minded. The history of science is littered with bad scientists that ins...
What does a pre amp do
I should add, the problems I reported on above were more with the Res Audio than the Audio Aero and I still run my Audio Aero into my tube monos. But the Res Audio runs through an SCE HRS before my Plinius SA102 - and there is no doubt the SCE HRS...
Contemplating other amps
Sean's comments on the differences between the amps rings pretty true in my experience. Being in NZ I would be looking at the Plinius Odeon or Plinius SB300. The SB300 is a fabulous buy. It has a little more going on than the Sunfire manages. I wo...
What does a pre amp do
I have the Resolution Audio RC50 and RC 55, and the Audio Aero Capitole. Each has internal volume control that matches the quality of many high end preamps and supposedly also have very good output stages. I do not know why, but they do not sound ...
Plinius 9200
I have heard the 9200 but it was not yet run in so it is hard to be definitive. Living close to the Plinius people I have also heard the stories about the improvements in the 9200. But without hearing one properly for myself it is probably best no...
Do we break in our componets or do our componets ?
Whether it is in my head or not, I perceive break in when I buy new components. That is what is, hence it is an issue. I do not perceive the same effect with a system that is simply unfamiliar. Based on this experience it is sensible for me to not...
Do we break in our componets or do our componets ?
In my opinion it is about 90% component break-in and 10% you breaking in. The way I see it, if it was you being broken in then all your friend's audio systems would sound horrid and never appear to you to be breaking in, all systems at audio shows...
Review: Plinius SA-102 power amp
Both the Plinius preamps are a little dark sounding and add some mid bass emphasis, with the CD-LAD sounding a little harder than the M16. I too agree the amps are better than the preamps. It is worth noting that Peter T voices his amps with Shahi...
Strangest Tweak?
Put your CDs in a ziplock bag in the freezer for a day, then very slowly bring them back to room temperature.
Need some audiogon expertise
I have had one experience where the 4004 MKII had such a high damping factor that the bass was swallowed by a 'floppy' room. By 'floppy' I mean suspended wooden floor or thin walls etc. In the same room a fairly basic tube amp managed much 'better...
What's the funniest or dumbest thing you did?
I had a CD Player with volume control but wanted to integrate it with other sources so needed switching and volume control. Built a passive box with remote controlled switching via top quality relays and a motorised volume pot, bypassing the volum...
Recommendations for tube amp to replace Plinius
I never liked the SA100 MkIII. Took it home a few times but my tube monos always played better music. Then I heard the SA102. Murdered the tube monos on 75% of the music, with the tube monos only being better on maybe 10% of the music. At that hit...
I need a female jazz vocalist. No Krall, No Norah
I don't think any of the above approach Shirley Horn (agree with you Newbee. Dianna Krall has a pretty voice. Shame she cannot use it like a jazz singer. With Shirley, if you are interested in subtle use of timing to twist and explore a tune fully...
SPeakers 90% of your sound
I agree that the speaker has a very large impact on the flavour of the sound. But when it comes to the quality of that flavour, the speaker shrinks into much less prominence and attention to all the minor issues such as vibrations, power cables, e...
