JA Perspecitve Stereophile review
I also would have wanted to know why the Joseph speakers did not work at all in Eric Lichte's room, as Atkinson mentioned at the start of the review but on which did not elaborate. All in all, I'm confident that Mr. Atkinson called it as he heard ...
More Tubes = Better Sound
Generally, I would say the less amplifying devices in an amplifier, be they tubes or transistors, the shorter the signal path and the better the sound. That may explain why, at least in my experience (using Jadis, Krell and ARC amps in the past), ...
the best amps for bass, best for the rest?
I can't comment much on the VAC preamps, as I use a Shindo preamp with my VAC amplifier. I had used VAC's Renaissance preamp (an older top-of-the-line model) in my old system for a little while a long time ago, which system went down below 20 Hz, ...
the best amps for bass, best for the rest?
In the bass, I think you'd have a toss-up between the Boulder and the Krells. While the Boulder I heard was indeed exceptional in the bass, Krell has built its reputation in large part on its reproduction of the bass frequencies, and I've heard a ...
Nola Baby Grand Reference I
I think that what Carl is saying is that the bass and the mid/treble drivers won't blend and sound as one unit. Every speaker designer who designs a multi-driver speaker system wants his or her speaker to sound as one voice across all the drivers ...
Nola Baby Grand Reference I
I suggest calling Nola. They are very helpful answering questions and making suggestions.
the best amps for bass, best for the rest?
I would suggest you go with a tubed preamp as well as the amp for the Baby Grands. I own the Nola Micro References, and have heard the Baby Grands, both using VAC electronics. I have heard the Boulder equipment, and while it is extremely revealing...
Dunlavy ?????
Another advantage to the Alethas/Athenas, as I recall, was that they could be used in a smaller room than the IVs and larger models, but would give more bass than the SC IIIs.
Dunlavy ?????
One thing not mentioned is your room size. You'll need a good sized room for the larger models, and expect to have to sit about 10 feet away from them for the drivers to integrate at their best. If you don't really need bass below 40 Hz, the SC II...
What's your profession? Age?
Well, being homeless has an advantage over many of us in that you don't have to worry about room acoustical issues! :^)
Lamm 1.2 vs. Pass xa 60.5
In the June Stereophile, John Atkinson wrote briefly in passing about both of the amps in his review of the MBL Corona amplifiers. He felt that the Pass 60.5 excelled at soundstaging and image palpability, but lacked an iron grip in the bass (comp...
Tonearm Options for Basis 2800
Syntax is correct, I had my Ovation upgraded with the Debut's vacuum platter, bearing and motor. Not sure if it's available for the other tables, but it was a very worthwhile upgrade. People thinking of the upgrade should contact AJ at Basis. And e...
primaluna gear, avalon eidolon speakers, cardas
Plus 1, Roxy54. I think this thread could have started and ended with Stereo5's appropriate post.

One cannot rush genius. It will be worth the wait, I'm sure.
