Conrad Johnson vs. Audio Research - Sonic Comparison Impressions
The older CJ equipment would fall into the warmer/lusher-sounding equipment.  I once heard a pair of CS 3.5s like yours driven by a CJ Premier amplifier (I think it was the Premier 3 or 4, a big stereo unit) that made the Thiels sound absolutely g...
Best Audio Writing of 2017?
Anything by Art Dudley.  I find many of his views have become mine after so many years of listening.  And he is a very fine writer, the main reason (along with Mr. Fremer) that I continue to subscribe to Stereophile.
Channel Imbalance at low volumes
I agree that it's likely the volume pot.  I don't know if it's been mentioned, but many volume pots, even in expensive gear (such as my Shindo preamp), just do not adjust volume for both channels equally at the lowest volume settings.  They do fin...
Radio personalities
Ghosthouse mentioned Dan Ingram, who was probably my favorite NY DJ.  He also had a jazz show on FM at the time as well.  I recall him playing the entire 6 minute version of Bob Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone, rather than the three minute AM version...
Best Brahms Third Symphony
I'll second Schubert on the Mackerras/SCO recording, a different sound than you might be used to but very refreshing.
Vandersteen Seminar at Audio Connection (NJ)
I was at that meeting as well (up visiting friends and snuck away to visit John, haven't seen him since I moved four years ago).  Richard was fascinating, and that Model 7 system with the subwoofers was quite frankly the best system I have heard i...
What are the best loudspeakers under $4000 to re-create lifelike piano
A used pair of Duntech Princesses or Dunlavy SC-IVs (or, if you can knock the price down a little, Duntech Sovereigns or Dunlavy SC-Vs).  Not the last word in transparency, but these speakers get the timbre and frequency response right (including ...
Annoying sounds from cars at stop light
Sounds like you've had too many experiences of that description (I don't hear it that much down here in a much less urban area, but it still happens)!  The answer to your first (rhetorical) question is simple--the driver causes his stereo to be li...
Krell KSA 200S Owners
If they still service them (and I think they do) their service department should be able to help you.
The midrange is the most important driver.
All I can add is that of all the speakers I have heard, the best have always been the ones that get the midrange right, so I'd have to agree with your assertion.  That's where most of the music is.
Question
Perhaps a picture would help?  Most of us lack dill's psychic powers.
Do classical CDs made from early analog tapes sound better on your system than new CDs?
The Cheskys Al mentions are indeed great recordings and very well-made CDs.  I think that while many of the analog recordings have been well-transferred to CD, many were not, particularly early on when the major labels started reissuing their old ...
Basis Turntables: Worth it or Ripoff?
You are paying for precision engineering and craftsmanship.  They are worth every penny/Euro/pound/etc., in my experience.  Definitely not a rip-off.
Shindo Masseto + Coincident Frankenstein versus Nagra 300i integrated
As a Shindo owner, I'm very happy with my Monbrisson, but I guess my tastes these days favor musical flow and a "right" midrange over detail and the other audiophile buzzwords.  I think you are looking at two different sonic presentations, each of...
No bass from the Clue speakers.
My recollection from the Stereophile review and the manufacturer's comment was that Atkinson noted a shelved-down bass in his measurements, the reviewer was lukewarm about the speaker and surprised by the lean bass, and the manufacturer suggested ...
