Definin' the blues (humor) Great post, SD! Reminds me of "Wierd Al" Yankovic's "Generic Blues" on one of his old albums, which included one of my son's favorite lines, "my brothers and sisters hated me 'cause I was an only child". Followed many of the rules you mentioned. Y...
A good speaker question I had Duntech Princess loudspeakers for 11 years, which had two 240 mm Dynaudio drivers per side and two smaller midranges. I periodically had to tighten the screws holding in the bass drivers, and (less often) for the midrange drivers. They just ...
Most achingly-beautiful music Tubegroover and Detlof, I believe the RCA Shaded Dog of this piece is one of the best recordings of the work, and one of the more valuable ones out there. Still looking for one...
mbl 101d speakers suck The above posts praising the mbl's are consistent with my experience with them, which admittedly goes back a few years to an earlier iteration of the speaker. I've heard them with Jadis JA 500s and the Gryphon amp, and they really are a lot of fun...
IC.to replace Pre-Out/Main-In jumper Tom's advice is good on all counts. If you are only replacing the jumpers and not running the signal through an external processor or hooking up to a separate external amp, I would seriously consider staying with the jumper, if it's that short "u"...
Expensive tweaks-are they worth it? The Walkers do make a difference on my dynamic system as well, although I think they're expensive for what they are (not the improvements). The designer of my speakers did a measurement at the tweeter with the HDLs in and out of the system and the...
Biggest bucks = Satifaction? Hmmmmm... The most expensive piece I bought for my system, both retail and what I paid for it, is my Jadis JP80 preamp. It has paid for itself many times over in musical enjoyment.
High end dealers in Frankfurt I was there with a group from the NJ Symphony Orchestra. They were amazed when I told them that people were still making horn speakers, SETs and the price of those speakers!
High end dealers in Frankfurt I'm sure you'll get lots of responses from our European members, but if you're in the Lufthansa concourse area at the airport, last month when I was there they had an Avant Garde Uno on display in a glass case for one of the high end establishment...
Sony 9000ES: DanWright or StanWarren Mod Dweller: You bet! Always a consideration when doing mods, as well as a possible resale value effect.
Stereophile "coverage" Mhubbard, years ago there was a big fight between Stereophile and Bob Carver, which I believe may have gone to court, and which I recall may have stemmed from his challenge that he could make a solid state amplifier that would sound the same as a ...
Stereophile "coverage" They actually had a few interesting articles in there, but very little, and only a handful of equipment reviews. What disappoints me the most is that they used to have a lot of music reviews, and now there's hardly anything. Two classical recordin...
dcs sound While I think the dCS Elgar is an excellent piece, ultimately my preference in my system was and still is the Audio Logic 2400. I felt the AL to be more alive sounding and dimensional, the Elgar a little restrained in comparison. You're really tal...
What Chopin solo piano cds are the best? Frank: Not yet, but I've always admired his work and you've whetted my interest. Thanks for the recommendation.
What Chopin solo piano cds are the best? Moravec on VAI, reissues of the excellent Connoissieur Society recordings. Very fine performances, well recorded and some of the best piano sound I've ever heard on CD. Well worth seeking out. |
