Most beautifull turntables today.... The top of the line Transrotor is stunning; unfortunately, the one my dealer was trying out for a while had speed stability problems or I might have been interested. I also like the understated look of my Bais Ovation.
Chailly Mahler 9th I've been partial to the Zander reading on Telarc, which has always left me holding my breath at the end. A different view, but a fine one. The Bernstein as well.
Have you ever moved to improve your system My wife wants us to move down to the shore in a couple of years, but one of my criteria in everything we have looked at has been a room that is large enough for my system and preferably can be a dedicated listening room. Probably will have to comp...
Rachmaninov for beginners Uru975: As I mentioned to Sean in a private e-mail, my father, then a young pianist and music major considering whether he should become a performing concert pianist for a career, heard Rachmaninoff play in concert and subsequently decided to beco...
Rachmaninov for beginners Rachmaninov was probably the last of the great romantic composers. His piano pieces are extremely virtuosic, but are extremely melodic and listenable. I would start you with his Rhapsodies on a Theme of Paganini, then his Second and Third Piano Co...
Amplifier Decision - Audio Research vs Krell I agree with S7horton; your speaker selection will play a big part in the amp you want. If you get Apogees or Theil CS5s you'll want the Krell, but otherwise you may prefer the tubes for a more efficient speaker.
What was/is the heaviest weight amp you herd/own I used to own Audio Research M300s, 110 pounds each, 90% of that in the front, it seemed. Slimmed down to Lamm ML 1.1s, 70 pounds each, as I'm not as young as I used to be.
Best recording / performance Dvorak Cello conc. Hey, don't let the lack of an SACD player deter you, the Merc is a hybrid, will play on any CD player. I'm not familiar with most of the recordings you listed above, but I would tend to go for one of the earlier recordings (go by the recording dat...
SACD Firmware issues? Guss2, do you know where can you get that problem fixed (I've had the same problem on a number of discs, almost as though the laser doesn't get the cue to stop reading)? It is a great way to clean out the system with pink noise, but it is a bit ja...
Markering of CD Edges I never had any loss of information--it could happen, I guess, if you get sloppy and cover up any of the pits the laser is supposed to be reading. Never have had to remove any, but I'd be careful about it-as long as it doesn't adversely affect the...
Best recording / performance Dvorak Cello conc. Agree about the Rostropovich--I believe it's on the Erato label. Starker on Mercury is also pretty good, and would be available now on SACD hybrid (not sure about the Erato's availability).
Speaker Reccommendation for Home Theater B&W makes a decent sounding wall-mounted unit, and Dynaudio has an in-wall version of its Audience 42 speaker, though a little more expensive. Martin Logan also has a wall-mounted speaker that's not an electrostat which sounds pretty good, but...
Looking for a great arm that is low maintenence Agree with Narrod. In my experience, the Graham 2.2, and before that, the 1.5, that I own and have owned are essentially no maintenance. Once set up properly, and it's not that hard to do (though I had my dealer do it), you can leave it alone. Bea...
CAT JL-2 Mk2 vs LAMM M1.2 ... on WP 6 or 7 John's suggestions are excellent--the IO was the principal unit that I was considering along with the Lamm, decided I couldn't fit the two chassis and I liked the lower noise floor on the Lamm. And, best of all, you can get one, if it turns up use...
CAT JL-2 Mk2 vs LAMM M1.2 ... on WP 6 or 7 Schorly: I would not suggest a passive preamp with the Lamm LP2. I own that unit and, while I think it's superb, it only has 57 db of gain in the MC stage which, on some records cut at low levels and at least with my Koetsu RSP (admittedly low out... |
