My Venture into Hifi with Vandersteen Model 1
What would work beautifully with those amps would be a pair of used Merlin TSMs - they are small monitors, and will not have the bass of the Vandersteen, but they are phenomenal speakers down to about 40Hz and easily driven by the Macs. I think wi...
which el 84 amp or integrated
I now use the RM10 with the Lightspeed Attenuator for volume control, the amp is clearly in the neutral side of things, would not describe it as warm - very fast, resolved and articulate. Fairly powerful for two tubes per side (35 watts). The comb...
My Venture into Hifi with Vandersteen Model 1
Zanon, OP may not have an comparative context for the price - simply listening to the combo, and if a beginner, he won't be able to assess how good they are versus other options in the price range. I think they are much better than "decent" for th...
Mapletree Audio versus Decware preamps
Nope. But I already bought some NOS RCA 12SN7s and 6x5GTs. I think it will arrive next week. Getting it in RCA Red/Black -- how do you beat that color scheme:)?
Merlin TSM with Manley Mahi-Mahi?
I'm not anti-sub, used Vandersteen with 3A Sigs and (2) 2wq subs for many years (that worked very well indeed), but what the Merlin does exceptionally well is resolution and coherence, if that is what you value, I would take the VSM route over the...
best vintage 70s, 80s amp?
Given your speakers, does that mean you are only interested in Solid State amps?
Merlin TSM with Manley Mahi-Mahi?
I would "upgrade" to the VSMs before I would ever add a sub to the TSMs unless it was purely dictated by finances and or aesthetics - from a sound perspective there would be no comparison to the coherence of the VSM versus TSM/Sub. Now maybe, but ...
best vintage 70s, 80s amp?
Earth to OP.
Best tube pre-amp below US $ 10.000,00 ?
I've not heard any preamp close to $10,000 that does not perform EXCEPTIONALLY well, really. Only issue would be some tube linestages with some SS amps with very low input impedance. Everyone will tell your the favourite, which is likely the one t...
Preamp to go with Pass Labs Rushmore Speaker
The speaker is active (has built-in amps)so in this case matching the amp is matching the speaker. What is the input impedance of the speaker/amp? Are the amps essentially XAs?
Dan D'Agostino is back with a new line
"I don't think this is the proper place Auxetophone." Correct. Not questioning what you know, right or wrong, but as you sense, there are many reasons for not continuing with this story in this public forum with what is essentially hearsay and one...
best vintage 70s, 80s amp?
Again, what is the motivation for going "vintage"? Also, if you want something from that time that is not likely to blow up on you, I would get a point-to-point wired tube amp like Quicksilver which can run almost forever with some inexpensive cap...
Merlin TSM with Manley Mahi-Mahi?
You don't need pricier tube amps IMHO, the Mahis are an excellent match for your Merlins and your preamp - a well thought out system.
best vintage 70s, 80s amp?
Jazz, rock, and classical - that pretty much covers all the bases sonically. Why are you looking for a vintage amp? What is it about it being vintaged that appeals to you? And, do you want SS or tube recommendations?
Best Integrated, period.
There may not be the best period, but I would rest assured on the McIntosh resale value.
