McIntosh Integrated What intrigues me about the 6900 is the futionality of the autoformer, not available on the 6300 or 6500, the 2275 obviously has transformers that acomplish much the the same thing as do most tube amps. I understand the theory behind the autoforme...
quicksilver v4 monoblocks Many have owned them and most will tell you they are a great value, very reliable, and able to drive most speakers. What specifically do you want to know about them? What speakers do you want to use with them?
CAT versus Berning Jafox, you have pretty much done ii for me, I won't be giving up the CAT. I'm very interested in any tube recommendations you could make (I'm using stock), and what supplier you trust for them.
CAT versus Berning The ARS will be used in summer, when the CAT runs to hot for my comfort. I'm thinking along the lines of Clio09, that the slightly warm Joule pre would work real well with the Berning (cool running), and that I could possibly sell the CAT -- if, I...
CAT versus Berning Were you ever able to audition the Berning?
CAT versus Berning I thought I would try to revive this question. Only chnage isthat I now have the Joule LA-150MKII preamp, I found the need for a tube pre because of the BAM unit that comes with my Merlin Speakers. So CAT verus Berning, any opinions.
Which Solid State Amplifier is Making you Happy? There are so many amps being named, I wonder if there are any bad sounding SS amps (hyperbole). It does seem that SS has come a long way.
3 way vs. 2 way Soda14a6v, I agree with you that not only in theory, but in practice, you can't have 20Hz response from from a good sounding two-way. But I think we start to accept serious compromises and complexities and power requirements when we seek 20Hz resp...
3 way vs. 2 way I think that absent the lowest octave, my Merlin VSM-MXe provide the coherency of two-ways, with the bass extension, dynamics, and loudness (105db peaks) of most three-ways, down 3db at 33Hz. Of course this is done with bass EQ (BAM), but from 40 ...
Plinius Amps mated with Merlin VSM-Ms? Hi Berony, I did speak with Bobby recently about some SS options and he did mention the Ayre, the autoformer versions of McIntosh, and the BEL 1001. One of the nice things about that Joule preamp is that it is perfectly happy driving the typically...
Current Production Classic Sounding Tube Amps Did not ask, but what type of preamp are you using? That could play a factor in your search for "warmth".
Current Production Classic Sounding Tube Amps I would look for amplifiers using EL34s for output tubes; most amps with these tube are on the euphonic side of neutral (but not all). I'm not sure if this is inherent to the tube, or to the types of circuits a designer uses when they to decide EL...
Merlin Fan's-What VSM is best bang for buck???? I agree with Martykl's comments and recommendation. You must start with at least the SE or later. The Millenium might be you best bang for the busk and then upgrade to the S-BAM.
A question I suspect reveals a lot of ignorance... A meter is critical for getting correct placement in your room for the smoothest spectral balance - especially important for get the bass right - but this is off thread. I think that tubes in Class A is not affected by loudness, other than clippin...
Cost no Object but Small Room i think you have gotten a lot of good suggestions, but will just throw in my 2 cents for the Merlin VSM-MXe. I have an 11x18 room and I don't think for a room this size there is a better speaker, at least not for my taste, which as you know differ... |
