Ars Sonum / Merlin TSM-MX??? Dgarretson, I agree, it is not as good as it gets, and there are several excellent choices - CAT, Joule, Atmasphere, Ayre (SS) etc. But for $4,000, the fact that is is on the same playing field as some of the top separates is saying something. But...
Ars Sonum / Merlin TSM-MX??? Vicks7, I own a Joule LA-150 MKII and CAT JL2 (also used CAT SL1 Ultimate, Lamm LL2, and Placette Active). While the Joule and CAT are better overall with all sorts of speakers, with the Merlins, the ARS is as good as it gets.
What amp should be used with merlin vsm's? I too was suprised when I saw the Ars, they are small, but you will not think so listening to them. Something very appealing about a small, compact unit that can give you great sound.
3 way vs. 2 way Ryder gets the point exactly, this is not a theoretical debate (althought that is interesting in its own right) but a specific application in a given room. As a practical solution, I think that 2-ways are the best way to go IMHO.
3 way vs. 2 way Yeah, your right. Utter nonsense.
Merlin Upgrade Experience The ARS is very good with all types of music, you (I) could certainly live with just it, but it is not 100 Watts of Class A triode. On the other hand, the CAT is not a simple, low powered amp, and in someways the ARS would have an advantage. The C...
3 way vs. 2 way I don't think 2-way is better than 3-way, or vice versa. I do think that if you sit six feet from the speakers 3-way won't work - not enough distance for the drivers to focus at the sitting position. Without the proper driver integration, you will...
3 way vs. 2 way My bias is that less is more in many ways. But in your room and listening distance, a two-way seems like the way you must go; I think you would have a difficult time getting three drivers to integrate with a coherent sound at that distance. What p...
Merlin VSM-Mx with super BAM A used Manley Stingray integrated would be a good choice if your budget is small. The Bryston is a good amp, but less than ideal for Merlins.
Merlin Upgrade Experience I will be using both. ARS small scale, simply miked music, CAT for larger scale, more complex music. I also have difficulty with the CAT in the summer, my room get 5-7 degrees warmer. Having both will also help extend the time between retubing the...
Vandersteen 5a or Eggleston Andra II There would have to be something very wrong with the Vandy system for the Eggleston's to be in "another league". With these two excellent speaker, it just has to come down to the type of sound you like, they do have different signatures, and both ...
Merlin Upgrade Experience Well, I've now gotten to 100 hours - they are better than I thought. While they were a bit better than the MX at first, I kept listening to/for audio ideas (bass, staging, clarity, blah, blah). I got to tell you, what I love about these speakers r...
Merlin VSM-Mx with super BAM I think you will not find a better speaker for your room and musical taste. The difference between BAM and SuperBAM is that the SuperBAM is a later version that was improved. The current SuperBAM is lead free and can be used with an MX, the MXe is...
Power: Good or Bad I think the understanding of the relationship between a chosen speaker and the amplfier necessary to make the best of it is the key equipment relationship and the one that a good dealer could be most helpful in educating the customer. There is suc...
Best drink while listening to your rig? Hoegarden, Chimay, Duvel, just about any Belgian Beer. When your having more than one: Yuengling. |
