favorite pass amp? Have any of you had a chance to compared the Aleph J with previous Alephs and or the XA series. As a point of reference I use Joule LA 150-MKII which can drive fairly low input imepdances and Merlin VSMs which efficient (89db) and have very linear...
Anybody ever audition the Pass XA series amps? Wanted to revive this thread as I too am interested in the answer, especially compared with some tube amp alternatives. I currently use a CAT JL2.
Review: Convergent Audio JL-2 Tube amp Any recommended small tube rolling experiences with the CAT amps?
Red Wine, Patek, Audio Zone and Atma Sphere Another SS you should consider, though you would have to buy it used is First Watt (Pass) Aleph J or the F4 model. Can't say you will like it better than your Atma-Spheres, but I find them very, very enjoyable with my Merlins and my other amp is a...
Best Integrated Amp Of All Times? The Ars Sonum Filaharmonia is the most suprisingly good amplifier (integrated or separate) I have ever heard. With only 30 Watt (25 Class A)it is limited to 89db or higher speakers with benign impedance loads. With the Merlin VSMs it sounds very c...
Stupidgood: Ars Sonum Ok. I have regained my sanity - I'm not selling the CAT JL2. I was so in love with the Ars Sonum, so overwhlemd by how good it is and enjoyed it so much I thought I would just get rid of the CAT. I was wrong. Not about the Ars Sonum, I love it, it...
Stupidgood: Ars Sonum No sophiscated isolation, I have a two shelves (Maple Wood) on a rack with a sandwich between them of cork and rubber (like the Mapleshade stuff). I also use Herbie tube damppers on the small tubes, but frankly, I can hear the difference. If there...
Stupidgood: Ars Sonum But that gold matches the Merlin brass rods so nicely. As far as I know, the SE version in the lastest version; some modification made in the course of Bobby's discussion with Ricardo.
Stupidgood: Ars Sonum There is an ARS SONUM up for sale at the moment. If you don't want to wait months to get one....
First Impressions of a First Watt - the Aleph J Wow! That is some statement given the reports on how good the Tom Evans Linear A is. What is interesting to me is that I very much like the Ars Sonum and the Joule/Aleph J combo and they sound quite different - that suprises me a bit.
Stupidgood: Ars Sonum I'm afraid I have to nominate the First Watt (Pass) Aleph J for inclusion in the stupidgood list - apparently Stereophile got it right a few years back in their review of the Pass Aleph 3. This too is a "low" power, 30 Watt, Class A amp, and it is...
Stupidgood: Ars Sonum I'm guilty.
Stupidgood: Ars Sonum The need is gone. And the CAT is too good, and too big to be ignored. The Joule is staying though as I try some SS amps - just got the Pass Aleph J.
Stupidgood: Ars Sonum I'm selling the CAT. My listing should be up shortly.
Ideal Volume level Thanks Davemitchell, I finally understand the mystery of volume control settings and why there use to be a "sweet spot". |
