Tube preamp suggestions. You did say you want a lot of coloration, what do you mean by that? I think SBank's description of the Joule is dead on.
Straight wire and gain linestage? The units from Promethius seem to be in the price range; their top of the line mono-dual box units are about $1100.
Triode versus Ultralinear/Pentode I asked that question on AudioCircle in the Manufacturer's forum and still have not gotten an answer. To some exent I hesitate with the idea of the mod (he did not object to the idea), thinking if it was such a good idea, why didn't he do so from ...
Straight wire and gain linestage? I think you may be able to work with a Passive Transformer Volume Control [TVC] in terms of impedance matching, and some have 6db of gain. That will be as close as you can get to straight wire with gain.
Straight wire and gain linestage? Do you need gain from your pre, or is a passive an option for you?
Are tube watts equal to solid state watts? Hlgoh2006, need anymore info? or do you feel your question has been answered?
Triode versus Ultralinear/Pentode So I take it that if I were to convert the Music Reference to triode it should be triode only, optimized for triode, and not a triode/ultralinear via switch approach.
Tube preamp suggestions. I have not heard any of the preamps (but briefly at shows) mentioned except the Joule 150MKII which I currently own. I chose it after considerable time spent with the CAT SL1 Ultimate MKII, Lamm LL2, Placette RVC, and Placetter Active. I use CAT J...
Joule Electra LA150 MkII or Lamm LL2 Deluxe? Mitch2, you say " I am running from the plate direct output instead of from the Mu follower circuit (this is a simple jumper switch)" - What does that mean? Is it easy to do? What are the improvements? And, if it is better, why is it not the defau...
Are tube watts equal to solid state watts? I agree that a watt is a watt, but tube amps can play louder due to smoother clipping characteristics than SS amps of similar power, so they will tend to seem more powerful - at least that has been my experience. There was an interesting demo at t...
Amplifiers:A Keeper for Life. Do you know of one ? Arthursmuck and Fplanner, what the contenders versus the 300.1? That is, what else did you listen to that you felt the 300.1 was better than?
Designer Hall of Fame William Shockley of Bell Labs for his contributions to the development of the transistor.
Amplifiers:A Keeper for Life. Do you know of one ? I've tried very hard to find an amp that would let me sell my CAT JL2, SS, many tube amps, and unfortunately I have not found anything close to the CATs (many amps that sounded wonderful in their own right, and easy amps to live with). This is unf...
Designer Hall of Fame I stupidly neglected to mention Henry Kloss who in addition to many other contribtutions to the audio field, codesigned the AR1 with Ed Vilchur. We also need to remember H.H. Scott for his contribtuions related to tuner technology.
Designer Hall of Fame Let's not forget D.T.N. Willamson whose circuit design from the 40s is perhaps the most copied and influential in tube amp history. |
