I would think being a modifier is no disqualifier; if you are a great one. Alex's reputation is of being a very skilled practitioner.
Joule Electra LA150 MkII or Lamm LL2 Deluxe?
I owned the LL2 and now own the La-150MKII, and matched with the CAT JL2s and Music Refence RM9 MKII amps it is very rich, with great bass weight and detail, yet also quite transparent - this pre is in no way slow and syrypy - it is comparable to ...

I agree. Vilchur does qualify on at least two fronts.

Mike Sanders of Quicksilver - for consistently high quality, affordable and reliabile tube design without relying on advertising or hobknobbing with industry media wonks.Who invented the transistor?

I also get the feeling that John Chapman of Bent Audio will one day be elected - for his work on passive TVCs - high quality, high functionality, great business ethics, and of course great sound in the right system.

I wonder if Audiogon could arrange a mechanism where we could elect 20 folks year one and a slate every year for additions. I find the tale of the designers, their approaches to technical issues, and to some extent their success in the market to b...
Most resolving, transparent amps.
Muralman1, I agree. It is why I have a "transparent" setup, and a "musicality" setup. The easiest wat to do that I think is neutrality throughout, and "voicing" with a preamp.

Do great recordings sound better on systems that make bad CDs really terrible, or those on which they to sound decent? I ezpect the answer leads to two types of systems.

Rodman99999, no list is complete without the men you mention, and I am very remiss for not have included Ralph Karsten who has proabably done more than anyone else to bring a well engineered, reliable, and excellent sounding OTL to the market.

Based on what others have told me, Atmasphere. Based on what I have heard, CAT JL2s.
Vandersteen Quatros or B&W 803D's
Hi Ken. You might want to start a different thread entitled "Speakers for Close Placement to Back Wall" - you would proably get a lot more response related to the issue. The Quattros definitely will address the issue of controlling bass output eff...
Passive preamp for Tube Amp?
Another excellent use for the RVC is to use it in line with your pre to give you 100s of volume level combinations, expecially when you have a stepped attenuator or a pre/amp combo with too much gain (e.g., CAT SL1) - a truly transparent device (w...

Mjstark, I think I agree with you and I think Richard has certainly found a very clever way to get bass right in almost any setting.
TVC Promethius versus Bent
I tried it with the CAT and thought it worked extremely well; the fact that it cost $135 has to make you scratch your head. I order a aluminum case version which I beleive is locked in my mail room at the moment, but will be comparing soon.
