Anyone using Duelund VSF capacitor in Merlin VSM
I think I'll live with the MXe with MasterBAM for a long while. If I'm not happy now, then happy is too elusive and too much of a moving target. Of course, it is good news for those buying new that might have an even better version of one of the g...
Who is using passive preamps and why?
Sure, it is close to a straight wire. But, they must also have a disadvantage. Alber Porter wend from Placette to DarTzeel, but why? What does a great active linestage do that the passive can't? The answer is straigtfoward when it is an issue of n...
Reference 3A
I like that First Recommendation. Seems like 25-30 Class A watts will drive the Veenas beautifully. Now if you are like me, you will prefer tubes, but tubes do need amps that are suited to tubes for optimal performance, which the Veenas are (like ...
Who is using passive preamps and why?
Herman, part of you thinking is that passives in the right system are superior to actives, I wonder if it might also be true that passive resistor based attentuation is superior to tranformer or autoformer passive attentuation IN THE RIGHT SYSTEM,...
Who is using passive preamps and why?
Now I read my post, and I wasn't even drinking. Next Agon upgrade -- spell checking.
Who is using passive preamps and why?
There is at leat one fella that designs a passive preamp around his amps, Roger Modjeski if Music Reference - a "simple" resistor-based attenuator - of course it is house with an active phono stage. He is adamant about the superiority of a passive...
Who is using passive preamps and why?
Cerrot, attenuators must all be resistor based, right? Any experience with them versus TVC/AVCs?
Who is using passive preamps and why?
I agree completely, which is why discussions and assessments of of amps, speakers, cables, tubes etc. outside of complete system context (let alone personal taste)while useful as a guide, are no substitute for listening to something in your room wi...

But the MXe is perfect!

Who is using passive preamps and why?
Herman, isn't the other side of your argument that passives simply don't work right in too many setups? A similar problem to a discussion about the virtues of SETs (If this is right, and that is right, then they are wonderful, otherwise...). Not a...
Impendance taps setting on a tube amp
From Roger M:"The RM-10 is very tolerant of short circuits and will not be damaged by them." "The amplifier is flat within 0.1dB and has low distortion of 0.3% when played below clipping on average level material." "At the recommended bias current...
New production EL84/6BQ5 tubes?
How do those GLs compare with Telefunken, Siemens, GE, RCA? One advantage I would imagine is that it should be much easier to get a tightly matched quad.
Who is using passive preamps and why?
Phd, I'm sure the McCormack gear is wonderful, but Nelson Pass and Charles Hansen have some pretty good sounding SS gear.
Impendance taps setting on a tube amp
As Roger Modjeski explained it to me, the tubes don't work as hard driving an 8 ohm load from the amp's 4ohm tap as they do from the 8 ohm tap - they last longer because they are not working as hard. You lose 20% of the power with this configurati...
