Who is using passive preamps and why?
Herman, any opinion on resistor attentuation versus transformer/autoformer passives? Anyone else? The consensus here seems to be TVC/AVC all the way, but that is not quite what I here when I talk to engineers....
Joule Electra LA 150 MK2 upgrade
It does not use those tubes; only 6350 and 6em7s (at least in the 150MKIIs) - I don't think there is any ground to be gained by using anything but Jud's NOS stash - GE's I think.
Anyone using Duelund VSF capacitor in Merlin VSM
Tabl10s, are you talking about an integrated without a tube linestage?
Most powerful and popular EL34 tube amp?
I would think you would get better bass and highs compared with a 300B. Though, you might think the 300B midrange is just glorious (not shabby with an EL34). Arguably the EL34 will just be more balanced from highs to lows.
Who is using passive preamps and why?
Herman, I think there are plenty of people that know perfectly well how to match a passive between their source, cabling and amp, and even when getting all that right still prefer an active preamp. Obviously in the wrong system a passive preamp wi...
Most powerful and popular EL34 tube amp?
I've not heard a better EL34 amp than the Music Reference RM9, which does have a 4 ohm tap.
Who is using passive preamps and why?
Why? A lot of bang for the buck. Why not? Good actives still sound better to my ears, an others, in more systems. But you can undoubtedy have SOTA with a passive approach, but you might prefer the flavoring provided by actives, especially with tubes.
Power output of tube amps compared to solid states
I have to believe science plays a role here, there is still good design and bad design and I believe is governed by understanding electrical principles. If that is not sound, no pun intended, you are not going to get good equipment. Now as to the ...
Best Sounding EL84 - 7189
Interested in the very same question regarding these tubes. Any new observations since 2006?
tutube or not tutube
Tube managment and worry is simply much less of a concern than dealing with them in an amp (that too can be managed). The only issue you do need to be sure of is that the output impedance is a good match with the input impedance of your SS amp. Yo...
Speakers for 55 watts of EL-34 tube power ?
I triple the Merlin recommendation, but a very different kind of speaker than the Vandersteens. If you ever do move to the 3As you will need more than 55 watts though, and the are not alot of 100 watt EL34 amps, but some. My Music Reference RM9SE ...
Pre amp with Atma-Sphere S30
I tried expensive ICs and Mogami's - I'm using the Mogamis, they do the job suprebly and they are cheap, VERY cheap of audiophile stadards.
Best $2000-$3000 full range speaker?
If I was buying in that price range, the Vandersteen 3A (there is a WAF issue = perhaps, depends on the W)are the IMHO the finest full-range speakers you can buy, but you will need 100 watts of power and if you go tubes, that can get expensive. Fo...
Joule Electra LA 150 MK2 upgrade
I prefer the SE to the prevous MKII, it is better to my ears, but I could easily live with the MKII (non-SE). I'm not sure how much better the 300 might be, but I can tell you this, if you are not happy with the 150SE, you will at some point not b...
Power output of tube amps compared to solid states
Wow. Now this is good reading.
