Harbeth comparison?
As a tubehead in terms of amplification preferences, I find that Harbeths are one of the very few speakers that can draw me in and keep me seated to listen, without tube amps.  They are naturally organic sounding.
Looking for vintage Quad ESL's - or my wife thinks a "shrink" becase she says I'm crazy!
One of the most impressive speaker sets ups I’ve owned were the Quad ESL63s with Gradient subwoofers, which were dipole pattern subs made by Gradient specifically for the 63s. Visually, the mated seamlessly. Sonically, they were the only mating of...
What’s in your system today that you also had 10 years ago?
Conrad Johnson Premier 12 tube monoblock amps, 140W/side.I've had them since the late 90's (as I remember).Possibly my best purchase.  I love tubes, but needed some that would drive a large variety of speakers (as I switch speakers pretty often). ...
Thiel Owners
So great to hear about Rob's business!
Thiel is officially closed!!
Awesome,  thanks for the update Tom.
Tekton custom grills
Wow, that grill situation is awful! (I much prefer speaker grills on speakers that I buy).I’ve never had the type of service problems I see here with any other speaker company I’ve dealt with (and that’s a lot!).The perils of expanding too quickly...
Anybody watch the Grammys tonight?
LOL.  Gripes about pop culture and rap.  A lot of "get off my lawn."Somehow I'm not surprised by this on this site (given the general demographics of audiophiles). I'm certainly no fan of everything on the Grammys...but is there anything more tire...
How NOT to sell an item on Audiogon
I'm amazed at how bad some of the photos are in adds.Especially when it comes to speakers:  Not only do speakers tend to come in different finishes from a manufacturer, but if it's a nice wood finish every finish can be unique.  So I really want t...

Not crazy at all.I've been through a ton of high end speaker systems since the mid 90's and I still lust after a pair of ESL 57s.  I'd have some now if I had the space.  (But they won't work in the setup area I have to work with).
Stereo Subwoofer Pairing
I plant to try one of my subs in the bay window area behind my listening sofa.  On one hand there isn't tons of room back there - a space about 8 feet by 3 feet deep.  On one hand I imagine bass frequencies "building up" in that space.  On the oth...
Stereo Subwoofer Pairing
willemj,I'm new to subs and just about to integrate a couple in my system.A commonly recommended crossover point for subs is 80Hz, which means the sub will also be still putting out sound above 80Hz.That seems to be getting into the directional te...
Room color opinions
I'd think color, at least the color of components, can bias one towards perceiving a certain sound.  It probably isn't total coincidence that Conrad Johnon tube amps, for instance, are gold colored and are often described as having a "golden" soun...
Why so few speakers with Passive Radiators?
tomtheil wrote:whereas deep bass benefits from near-the-floor coupling. This is one reason I’ve viewed some of the many boutique speaker platform/feet with a bit of suspicion. Many report sonic change in their speakers upon using these feet, but i...
What is really the purpose of streaming??
Although I've been listening to my ripped CDs for many years, I now love listening to Tidal as well.  Now I don't have to buy new CDs if I don't want to (with the one problem that building a Tidal library is nowhere near as convenient in terms of ...
Still looking for speakers in the 10-20,000 range
Re Joseph Pearl:I absolutely love the tonality of the smaller Perspective and Pulsar models. I’ve never read a single bad comment about the big Pearls.Almost every comment, from writers covering shows, audiophile comments from shows and demos, and...
