w4s sti1000 or belles 150a ref for audio physic??
Tvad, okay, just to be clear, it was the Belles stereo 150A. While I don't doubt that the 150A Reference monos are the best of that series, as I said, the Belles I had in my system would have had to improve by orders of magnitude to compete with t...
w4s sti1000 or belles 150a ref for audio physic??
I couldn't disagree more with the above two posts. I have never been a fan of ICE amps, but I currently have the W4S STI-500 in my system and it is very definitely an exception to the rule. It's highs are airy and give you a wonderful sense of perc...
better the mc2500 for 2500.00 used
I don't think the Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers are known for playing particularly "LOUD," but the Wyred 4 Sound STI-1000 would give you more power, better sound, and you could replace both your amp and preamp. It's new list price is $2499.If it were m...
Tube Preamps
Yes, your speakers are a tad bright and it's very possible for an amp to sound bright too... and pretty likely if it's solid-state. Some sound brighter than others. Yes, flat response is the goal, but you probably wouldn't like it if you heard it ...
EL34 in Cary CAD120S bias info needed
Thuan98... that's annoying that the bias resistors have to be changed to try the EL34's but fortunately I like the way mine sounds with the stock EH KT88's. And it doesn't explain why Cary's technical guy told me I could do it without modification...
EL34 in Cary CAD120S bias info needed
Jdec, my 120S has gone back to Cary to address a mechanical hum problem. The folks at Cary say the amp should be quiet, so I sent it to them to have them make it that way. And I figured I'd have them give it a general check over while it is there....
Mono recordings - Listen with one speaker or two??
My friend says that using a mono phono cartridge is the way to go... no vertical component in the groove wall and way less noise. He said there is a Denon model for less than $200 that is very good. Other than that, I don't think it makes that muc...
EL34 in Cary CAD120S bias info needed
Thuan,It seems like every amp is different, for example, my VTL ST-87 biases at 270mA for each of 4 EL34's.I spoke to someone (Gerald, I think) at Cary a while back about the biasing of the 120S for EL34's and he said it should stay the same at 14...
Cary CAD120S: Please help on locate tubes position
I was told by Cary front and rear make the most difference.
Forward Monitor with Detail Speed and liquid Highs
Ohm is making an SE version of the MicroWalsh Tall (sells for $1400/pr). If you ask for it with the "European Voicing" the sound will be bright and very detailed. This version was too bright for my taste but it may be to your liking. I'm surprised...
Warm Bass speaker cable.
Actually, I disagree with Sidssp in that all speaker cables, interconnects, and power cords have many properties and electrical characteristics that can be easily measured and don't change very much over time. They all have a certain resistance, c...
dear maggie 1.6 owners a good way to run them
But what you're doing is entirely different from what Polk did. Polk used polarity inverted drivers to cancel interchannel crosstalk, which resulted in a spacious soundstage. You're basically just doubling up the bass panels, which, in addition to...
JA Michelle ORBE mk II's Suspension Tweek
I used Black Diamond Racing cones to unsuspend my Orbe. It worked out really well, looks good, and sounds better than ever. I removed the top acrylic plinth and set the points of the cones into the bottom acrylic piece with the adjustable feet. I ...
Hybrid vs. Straight Tubes
TVAD writes: "However, I heard a significant change in the Moscode 401HR hybrid amplifier by changing non-output, nine-pin tubes."The same can be said for changing the input tubes in tube amps as well. Changing cables will change the sound too, so...
Preamp combination question
If you're going for a very low output MC cartridge, I'd go with a solid-state phono preamp since you already have a good tube linestage. If your budget is $1200 I'd probably go for a Whest Two, PS GCPH (maybe a Cullen-modded unit), or a Musical Su...
