Music you didn't like at first... but now? I'm with George on the country thing (the real deal not the current radio station poppy stuff). I dove into playing and listening to blues after moving to New Orleans in the mid 80's after leading an earlier life of hard rock and new wave. As age ...
Biamping; Amps w. Different power ratings? In sound reinforcement set ups we always use significantly more power on the bottom end than on the tops (like around 1200 wts/side or better on the subs vrs less than half of that on the tops). The bass is what drives most of the peak power requi...
HELP Which wall of new room to put system on? I'd put the speakers on the short height long wall. The upward slope on the ceiling may help first order reflections since it would be more of a tangential interface. Long wall placement also gets you away from the side walls which delays the firs...
Large Room-Treatments and WAF-HELP?? I have a large bay window and opposite that a glass door in a 16x22 room. Huge house plants in both windows worked well. A well spread out Ficus in the bay and some bambooie leafy thing nest to the door. Kind of works like a WAF approved room lens...

retube VTL amp groove tubes does a good job at additional quality control on their tubes compared to the factories but you'll pay a premium. Still a better deal than getting hit with the factory markup. I'm not sure they do any additional tube QC or not. Zaikesm...
Isolation Platforms...worthwhile? i've had mixed results using DIY stuff (and this conclusion would be possible with commercial as well). I used an air suspension system under my CDP that tightened up the bass and mids to a nice degree but the upper octave completely dissappeared....
Best bass response in under $1500 used towers add a grand and take the time to find a pair of used dunlavy cantatas, better yet some athenas but the cheapest i've seen is in the 2500 range. they'll be the last speaker you ever need
Blues /rock: music recommendations? Tinsly Ellis is the blues/rock king IMO, too much soul for any one guy. Jimmy Thackery is right up there with him. Ian Moore and Gary Moore (not related) are also good choices. Coco kills but look to his earlier stuff would be my recommendation......
Groove Tube EL34LS i think that groove tubes uses different suppliers depending on what tube. Their claim to fame is going through the tubes and applying strict quality control and matching. You can order output tubes based on break up characteristics based on this ...
Component that stopped the upgrade cycle cold? Honestly, my listening room. I've heard my speakers in a well prepared room and know what they can do(dunlavy athenas) and have no desire to spend what would be needed to significantly better them (wilson maxes are quite nice at $20k used). My amp...
Aggressive, live, electric blues..... Jimmy Thackery: Wild Night OutThere is a live Luther Allison collection from his career that is killer.Ronnie Earl, Blues Virtuoso in Europe isn't exactly agressive but it is some amazing live blues guitar playing. He don't have a live album but if...
Guitar playing audiophiles, Martin or Taylor? Crazy you need to expand your horizons dude. Country swing, and blues, especially slide, on an acoustic archtop is the shit. You can coax way more tone out of an acoustic than out of an electic and the hand control you pick up will help your elect...
Thoughts on my speaker search...kind of long...... I went on a four state speaker tour when shopping for my last pair. I pretty much knew qualities what i was looking for when i left and once i heard the speakers that gave it the shopping was pretty much reduced to clarification of the obvious cho... |
