Frequency/Channel imbalance. Help
"I have my TT about 4 feet from the cartridge"There's your problem! ;-)
New TT ideas please
Thanks Doug, for the clarification. I always thought of correct VTA in terms of focus, which is a simple way of dsaying what you describe, relating to the perfect mating of the sylus to the groove, which, at least with the fancier stylus designs, ...
Warped records please advise
For anything but accute edge warps, a decent record clamp will take care of it. Record weights will not take care of anything but mild warps on thinner records. I have made some simple clips out of brass wire that clip the edges of edge warped rec...
New TT ideas please
Intuitively, I have always thought that every technology has it's place, even within a given design. I have always had a hard time trusting a designer who espouses a one size fits all approach. It seems to me that implimenting layering of harder/l...
Phono stage for Benz Wood H2
It's called the PH 1 DJH under their Audio Electronics brand. It has 36 dB of gain so you might need to be a bit forgiving of noise with the Benz which has a 2.5mV output at 3.54@cm/sec. Not a bad choice though.

Maple platforms
Preferred tonewoods vary with application, ie. back and sides vs. top, wind instrument vs. string. In any case the function of a platform couldn't be more different than a resonant instrument.

Suggestion for an entry-level turntable
A used Rega P5 or a brand new P3/24. Upgrade either with the outboard power supply, among other upgrades, over time. Mount a Clearaudio Aurum Beta S or a Benz Ace.
Recommended first turntable?
buying cheap isn't everything. spoken as a true dealer.

wherever you get them, make sure they are super low noise, perhaps cryoed. ATSI or Upscale might suit you as vendors.

I would boil it down to getting quieter tubes. It's your cheapest and possibly best option considering you're not disliking the current situation that much.
